You are right though. Cut 20 laps of the CBD and every cop in town is going to know who you are and you will get picked on.

As for R's attracting attention. I would dare say the GTI's would get way more looks than an R. (except for the fact you would get a sore neck in no time given the number out there)
An R is way more of a sleeper than a GTI. I wouldn't doubt if you asked people that 95% of them would claim the GTI is the top of the line model in the Golf range.
I would suggest that this is because the GTI has the brand recognition due to heritage rather than anything asthetic

There's nothing boring about your MkV GTI, it's damn nice looking car. Especially in red.

It's a good talking point from other R/GTI owners. I share a CBD carpark with a Pirelli GTI and new silver Polo GTI.....we always say G'day and ensure we can park next to each other to ensure our cars don't get bashed or scratched!

I also wave/acknowledge other R/GTI owners when they pass me. Am getting RSI in my wrist as there a many here in Canberra...

The only negative attention I get in my GTi is my mates calling me a Fag for driving it

But seriously... other drivers just have NO IDEA about the R it seems. One of the things that I are constantly having to watch for is when overtaking someone. The R (especially at Stage II+) just accelerates so rapidly from any speed, and I'm constantly getting people almost turn into me because they don't bother look and just move, not expecting that little hatchback in their mirror to have moved.

When I first got my R, I did come out of the shops to find two girls taking photos of it... not sure what that was about. Another time a BMW 760 driver got out of his car at the shops and then did a walk around the R. But really, that's the only attention I've seen it receive.
You know what, I seem to get a LOT of attention with my R32 (I know it's not the R but still falls under the same category) from teenage girls, especially around the camberwell area in Melbourne (lots of young generation foot traffic on weekends). I'm not complaining though .

R32 has one of the best exhaust notes going around! That would do it alone

i was driving behind an Audi A5 3.2 Coupe this afternoon, it had a few cute soft toys on its rear parcel..

there was a little twisty which i normally drive 55-65 on the 60km zone although the advisory speed sign shows 35. i tried 35km/h a while ago and my wife laughed cos it was just too slow unless you drive a truck on the twisty.

i happened to be stuck behind the $100k A5 on the same twisty and that 195 kW/330 Nm car slowed down to 35 on the twisty!! perhaps it's the soft toys effect?!? :p

It's probably just someone who buys the most expensive model because it's the most expensive, not because it's the "sports" version.

I'd actually like a little more attention at the traffic lights.... its a little boring having 300+ whp in a stock looking GTI when nobody wants to have a go...
