What did the extra 30hp come from?

Are there downsides to having so much power through the front wheels?
Does it affect driving on a daily basis?

That's probably why VW removed the R36 version of the passat in the new generation.

That's one of the reasons why I bought the R over the GTI. I can do as much as I like to the engine and develop significant power and not have to worry about traction. If you're free on the 1st of June come and join Ferret and me at WSID for a run. At least you'll get traction there.

Sammy is at WSID practically every week

Traction there for FWD cars with the amount of power at the wheels is still a challenge!

my gti somehow attracts racer wannabe P platers in a skyline and a holden.... these young people tend to drive aggressively behind me....

or perhaps i drive like a grandpa (when the oil is still <80 degrees) and they expect too much from a GTI.. :p

It is a challenge... the only way to do it is to slide the clutch... it got me a 2.0 60' time with street tyres.

Doesn't make sense? The R36 was the sports version and actually had things the normal passats didn't including the 3.6L with 300hp. They also to my knowledge didn't remove the R36 (or R version) from the new line, they haven't made it yet. It may have been the most expensive passat but anyone who bought one has good reason to, and the Golf R is around the same price anyway....

True, the R though would be 10K cheaper

Doesn't the current Passatt CC V6 now use the same engine as the outgoing R36, and faster too i've read on here?

It does have the same engine, but personally I think they look horrid. They also lack those little styling things that make the R36 a nicer place to be, and lack the exclusivity of the R model which should hold better resale value (sure has so far).

I would have got a Golf R to be honest, but my gf is on her P's still and can't drive a turbo or a modified car, and I'd never leave a Golf R stock, so until she's off her P's the R36 is the best choice for me. She can't drive my Evo, so I would have felt pretty harsh getting a second car she can't drive either - Vic roads wouldn't give her an exemption for either vehicle). In a couple of years the R36 will be traded for a Golf R equivalent or something similar from another brand, the Evo will be sold, and I can consolidate to one fun little car.
