I couldn't afford the R but glad I didn't get it as I wanted a new car with a new engine. I do fancy the awd and wish they'd just give the GTI more power, proper lsd and awd.

lmao... give the GTI more power and awd? They DID. It's called the R.
I for one am glad that the GTI is not AWD. What would be the point? That's getting into the zone of the GTI vs R thread though

But isn't the new 35 just an ordinary GTI that has been tarted up and given a tune? It still is just a GTI underneath.i.e. no mechanical performance mods like LSD and K04.

I'd have to agree with a lot of other comments I've read, I always consider that if you carry on like a tosser behind the wheel and do stupid dangerous things then sooner or later you will either get caught by the PoPo or you'll kill yourself or someone else. The VW's are IMO a great looking car but as there are so many of them gracing our roads nowadays to most people they are just another car passing by. Where you live will obviously play a part as well, but if you don't bring attention to yourself you shouldn't have to worry too much about being targeted by either the police or other motorists. On the other hand some scumbag running a 20c piece up the side of your ride or kicking in a panel or 2 whilst parked in the street can happen anywhere, regardless of what you're driving and what planet they're on at the time of attack. (Fortunately I'm not talking from personal experience - fingers crossed X) my .02 cents worth =)

Yes but it addresses the uplift to something that sits between a GTI and an R, to Corey's point your wish has already been granted. But to get the compromise then the 35 is the next thing coing your way.. for mine it is the replacement for the Pirelli

I wouldn't say it sits between the GTI and R. Unlike the Pirelli there are no performance mods, only cosmetic so a GTI with optional extras.

While the Edition 30 offered 170kW (230hp), this anniversary model squeezes out a few more wasps, with 175kW (235hp) on tap - up from 155kW for the regular GTI.

Yes... but the Pirelli (Edition 30) was a "detuned" Golf R without the AWD (i.e. the Pirelli/30 has the same engine with K04 as our Golf R, but instead of having 188/195/199kw it has 169kw via an ECU detune).

As yet we don't know where the extra kw are coming from on the Edition 35? Hardware changes, or an ECU tune.
Whilst an ECU tune is fine, that fact just needs to be established. Because if an "enthusiast" is wanting to buy an Edition 35 and then tune it, going to APR or GIAC etc will only take that from 175kw to the standard 189kw that the regular Golf GTI tune gains.

All good detail tech Corey, however my comments are merely addressing the middle ground our friend was looking for not a GTI and yet not an R. Also just to clean up the view that there were performance difference between a Standard GTI and a 35.

Aaah... I guess. But then, a Golf GTI with an ECU tune will narrow that gap even further (achieving the same power and more torque than a Golf R at stock). I seriously can't wait to see whether the Edition 35 is just a GTI with an ECU tune, hehe
