with the servicing 15000 1yr... is there a "check up" service at all? say 1500/3000ks? as i find it strange that it doesnt.

Some dealers offer a free check / top-up of the levels. They don't put it on a hoist or anything & you should be capable of checking the levels yourself.

I didn't bother taking them up on the offer as the car was running like a dream & faffing about going to the dealer for no reason wouldn't have added any value to the ownership experience.

Yep the car was always serviced with them on time, and it had only done 39000kms.
So yeah what can i say, they are pricks. They didnt even offer to get vw to pay for it, i had to make them request it.
I asked them to check out a a noise i was getting in the power steering too, now they tell me I need a whole new steering rack. So I imagine itll be the same deal

I would recommend that you voice your concerns direct to VW customer service. Apparently getting a Goodwill Fix is a bit of stuffing about, so the dealers don't try very hard. Something dot-pointed in writing usually works well. Keep in mind that consumer protection laws now provide for a "fitness for purpose". eg: A reasonable expectation that an item will perform correctly for a certain period of time. I wouldn't think that a 39,000km/3 years is the design life of a DSG mechatronic or a Power steering rack but is probably OK for a ECU relay.

True, the poster in question has an R32, so any mods won't increase power a huge amount but I guess a tune or an intake could be used as fair reasoning not to cover a gearbox. I guess if he's lowered it or done something with the suspension then you are out of luck with the steering rack too. In both cases, 39,000km is still quite new. I would hope that a DSG would be good for at least 100,000km & a steering rack good for at least 150,000km of trouble free motoring - even on a mildly modified car.

Yes, under normal driving conditions, but it also depends where you drive (the roads condition), how do you drive (for example hitting the curbs too often?) and so on. So, yeh, there are a lot of reasons and opportunities for manufacturers to refuse to cover the car that is out of warranty and one could have a hard job to prove otherwise.
But in general, I agree that some components fail way too soon after the warranty. It is a good idea to keep the record of all repairs that were done during the warranty period (don't count on the dealer that he would give it to you if you need it) so they could be used to point out that the component in question was already repaired under the warranty.

Instead of creating a new thread:

Just had my 30000k service done at Volkspower (Burwood, Melbourne). Despite it being a slightly bigger service than the 15k one they were over $100 cheaper than Berwick VW, provide the same drop/off pickup service to the nearest train station as Berwick did, or can loan a curtesy car (MK3 Golf), PLUS they washed it for me (are dealers supposed to do that, because Berwick didn't last time). Service book is stamped (Volkspower stamp, not VW). I now also have a little Volkspower sticker on the back windscreen which I'll probaby remove after a couple of days. This post should make up for it anyway.

All up $297 + highly recommended. The only problem for me personally is that I have to leave work an hour early to get there by 5pm. Normally that would be fine, except I may have to go back to work tomorrow arvo to finish something off before Monday.
