sorry guy, I was presuming with the reflash you could raise the cutout limit so you can get more revs and thereby hit 100 in 2ndOriginally posted by Guy_H View PostIt's still RPM vs Gear ratio's - even if you run a jet engine through a gearbox, its still the same limits
On my FPV, I got an extra 500rpm added before cutout2007 Audi RS4 with: APR ECU Upgrade; JHM Quick Shifter; Milltek Catback and Downpipes; KW V3 Coilovers; Argon Creative Carbon Fibre Splitters

what's wrong with the 6-sp in the VIII (i assume you mean). not to take it off topic, but i was under the impression that the aus spec 8 was quite a bloody brilliant car. the gearbox gremlin's only were apparent after owners started pushing massive power through it.Originally posted by REXman View PostI remember reading about how great the 6 speed is in the AUS Spec EVO XIII and the reviewer was adamant that he'd driven the car. Australian EVO VIII's didn't receive a 6 speed gear box, only a 5 speed.Originally posted by changas View Postwhat's wrong with the 6-sp in the VIII (i assume you mean). not to take it off topic, but i was under the impression that the aus spec 8 was quite a bloody brilliant car. the gearbox gremlin's only were apparent after owners started pushing massive power through it.MY07 Red GTI 3 Door

ahh yes, i stand corrected. then in saying that, the 5-sp is the stronger out of the two.Originally posted by Johnbu View PostAustralian EVO VIII's didn't receive a 6 speed gear box, only a 5 speed.MY11 Reflex Silver Golf R DSG / Mitsubishi Evolution MR

It is raised up - but the level you would need, the rods dont like to stay attached to the crank from what I understandOriginally posted by gareth_oau View Postsorry guy, I was presuming with the reflash you could raise the cutout limit so you can get more revs and thereby hit 100 in 2nd

Another thing to consider is that the RS250 also has to change into third to reach 100kph.
To me, rolling acceleration is more important, DSG won't fix that, The R is the slowest of them due to weight & possibly drivetrain losses.
I look forward to picking up a cheap Rs250 in a couple of years to replace the GTI.

This is exactly the case with motoring writers - they are JOURNALISTS who have an interest in cars, not expert drivers who write articles. And very few have much high performance training or race experience so they generally aren't great for exploring the limits of cars. They are good for giving daily driving impressions for ordinary people rather than enthusiasts.Originally posted by REXman View PostLastly I know a guy who writes for 4WD monthly.. He has a good way with words (since he did a law degree) but he's no car expert. I think he owned one crappy old AWD once.. Ages ago?
That's not to say there isn't ANY good drivers/authors. I saw one guy on CARADVICE who wrote an excellent article. They can be found, but some just do it on the side as a side hobby.
All of this applies to motorcycle magazines to an even greater degree.Resident grumpy old fart

Each gear change in a DSG in 'rolling acceleration' shaves off time due to the use of only 8 milli secconds each gear shift. A manual needs a few tenths mate!Originally posted by Johnbu View PostAnother thing to consider is that the RS250 also has to change into third to reach 100kph.

Yeah i know how that works as I own a dsg GTI but if I'm overtaking in 3rd 80-110 in, manual or dsg will make no difference.
Dsg makes VAGs more efficient overall but at the expense of enjoyment.
However I do enjoy driving manual.

This thread was good for a laugh...
The biggest chuckle came from when someone mentioned "the R badge's heritage"
Would that be the heritage of: being slightly pudgy, understeer-y and somehow less than the sum of it's parts suggests it should be, but damn it sounds good?
Cos if so, they have dropped the one thing that was a positive!

This is the most honest post I've read so far about the R32. Most people would be too polite to say what they think.Originally posted by sh|tbmxrider View PostThis thread was good for a laugh...

R32 owners keep harping on about the (justifiably) sexy V6 growl. But fact is that the R32 was nose heavy and not as good a car as the MkV GTI or current R.
Most R32 owners must wear heavily rose tinted glasses.Last edited by triode12; 25-01-2011, 07:52 AM.
