  • Power don't matter much to me, nor straight line speed. If it was, I'd buy an F6 and then remap it. Game over. What's the point though? There's performance and performance, right? Handling, grip and great braking is what I'm after and the Clio delivers. The Megane is a bit too flash for my liking as well and from what I read not 100% as agile as its little brother. So I'm sure my drive is in the right performance league.
Too bad the Elise is not easy to live with as a daily driver...

Chassis, handling and rawness it's not.

European press including the UK have basically said that in terms of grin factor it's the most fun you can have on a track short of a GT3, Exige or dedicated race car.

It's taken out the Top Gear UK magazine ultimate hot hatch shoot out which had all the current contenders (Golf R, Golf GTI, Polo GTI, Scirocco R, Cupra R, RS250, Focus RS as a start). It finished 3rd to the Evora and GT3 in Evo magazine COTY 2009 and Car magazine said that it's "probably the greatest hot hatch chassis ever made".

Yet it didn't even get a look in for Motor PCOTY. Confuses me but hey, such is life.

As before though I like all good cars. As long as they've put some passion and soul into it somehow and not just made a soulless white good for getting from A to B, there'll be something to appreciate.

It's just sad that the way that people are acting so negative and blinkered in this thread. It's not like we're discussing the Ferrari 458 or a Rolls Royce Phantom.

      Cheers,
      Trent

I think its because it wasn't new this year and/or it didn't win overall/its class last year

nothing a bigger turbo wouldnt fix? and within budget, given the $19k price differential i mentioned before?

                Not for a second.

The amount of articles I have read in both magazines and online, where quoted figures, model specific data etc has just been wrong is.. to say the least.

I remember reading about how great the 6 speed is in the AUS Spec EVO XIII and the reviewer was adamant that he'd driven the car. More .

That's why so many people on here have a valid and healthy opinion, cause they bought, modified, researched and owned most of the cars and mods they are talking about. Nothing compares to first hand experience you get through ownership over a decent period of time, especially when it's an enthusiast.

Lastly I know a guy who writes for 4WD monthly.. He has a good way with words (since he did a law degree) but he's no car expert. I think he owned one crappy old AWD once.. Ages ago?

That's not to say there isn't ANY good drivers/authors. I saw one guy on CARADVICE who wrote an excellent article. They can be found, but some just do it on the side as a side hobby.
Well I remembered writing something about online and printed journalists not always knowing what they are talking about.

Well here is a good article.. NOT.

Its on the S3, and he talks about a few things. See If you can pick them!

I rest my case, on that front.

                  Summary?
The only thing i notices was the use of 4WD instead of AWD in the description and the pictures not being of the car they tested but that is a mainstay of the automotive review market.

                  • "Let’s just consider Audi’s S3. On the face of it, there’s very little evidence that this is a serious performance car – it looks as innocent as any A3. It looks like a slightly smaller A4 so, in other words, like every other Audi except the R8. Yet under its bonnet is a turbocharged engine from the Golf GTI. That would be enough to give it some credibility but in the S3 it doesn’t produce the standard 146kW. Oh no, because in true hot-hatch tradition, it’s been tuned to burn rubber with 195kW. Just a pity it looks so dull."

But it does run the EA113 engine from the Mk5 GTI.
The turbo is different but that isn't the engine and the internals have apparently been strengthened but i haven't seen anything official on that so essentially hthe writer is correct.

                      • When you refer to an engine, and the specific model it is attached to, it includes the turbo that is bolted to it, hence its power output and application.

The S3 uses the Golf Rs motor and vice versa.

                        • Well, he does say that it has been "tuned", and later he does mention that specifically it's the MKV GTI engine that it's based on. So I mean I don't know, I don't see too much of an issue... MKV GTI, R, S3 and TTS, they all use the EA113 engine...

It's still RPM vs Gear ratio's - even if you run a jet engine through a gearbox, its still the same limits
