VW Scirocco for Australia. Any Golf R buyers thinking of swapping?
Owning both 3 dr and 5 dr Golfs, the 5Dr is definitely and logically more practical. But the 3Dr just looks so much better in profile and more like a hot hatch.
I see and what does said "Hot Hatch" look like.. even the Urban Dictionary doesn't clarify
I'm in the market now and would happily wait for the Rocco R. My concern is that they will do a focus RS and price it high with a limited run. And the wait will be pointless
The VW Mk1 Golf is (inaccurately) seen as the father of all hot hatches and it was 3Dr. So using that as a template for all other hot hatches. It has to be 3Dr.

Or it has to be, you know, a hatchback. With a more powerful engine in it.
I don't see hot-threedoor hatchback in the name.
Other wise the 5 door 16V Mk2 GTI is not a hot hatch.
And the 5 door Megane 225 is not a hot hatch.

I am thinking of taking an overnight trip to the Melb Motor Show so I can compare the Golf R and Scirocco R before placing an order....
Candy White Scirocco R DSG with Panoramic Sunroof and RNS510 Sat Nav, tint Cup Rear Spoiler, VMR V718 GM rims, APR Tuned, Brembo 6 pot BBK, Eibach Pro-Kit springs, Low line RVC, Exhaust flap delete

Sigh, it is getting tiresome having to justify what I write. So I'll put an end to this, by asking you to take a read of this book. It answers a lot of questions.

According to The Age's Drive, The Scirocco R will be priced around the 3 dr Golf R.
This is really interesting. Last month I traded up to a new Golf GTI, I said to the sales guy I would hold off if the Scirocco was likely to come to Oz. He said he had dinner with the VW Aust MD the night before and there was no way it was ever coming to Australia. She is the person quoted in the article.
Goes to prove the saying, never trust a car salesman.
I feel your pain completely. When I bought one of my first brand news cars, it was a MY03 WRX down at brookvale. When I went in I told the guy look I want a WRX but have always wanted a club spec car, cause it doesnt cost too much more and you get some cool options on it. He said to me they are not releasing it in this body style (MY03 WRX). We went ahead and did the paper work on the normal WRX with tints, Ming and sunroof.
Next week I was going down the main road (Pittwater?) and what was in the showroom window? A ****EN MY03 WRX Club Spec.. Dont get me started. Like anyone in life, you always get dogs -so If you find a good one - stick with them!!
To the people earlier discussing about 3 door v 5 door Golf's, this is my opinion on the matter
now some people would be saying "why you getting a 5 door?" well for me, spending nearly $60,000 on a car, I want to get the maximum amount of use out of it, for many years to come and the 5 door option would allow me to have a smart practical car now, and it would also allow me to have a practical car when I start a family and the car would also hold its valve over a long term,
TBH I thought the same thing when I bought the car, and it is justified what you are saying. Im a bit older but not too much (29), and bought this car in 5 door for the fact that it will serve me for a long time being a 5-door and all.
But in saying that, i rarely have more than one person in the car, they are the same car and size at the end of the day.. and the 3-door is cooler. I know that all the tuners in germany are actually If I wanted space legitimately I should of bought an SS wagon or something. Off topic: I bought the DSG cause its more economical as well and thought now maybe i should have gotten manual anyway despite the 0-100 times..
The VW R is definitely a fantastic car for the money, and 5-doors and AWD will never be a bad proposition
just curious, does it really make a difference where the vehicle is assembled? don't get me wrong, i'd still very much like my cars to be assembled in Germany.
Im not sure if there is any difference tbh
I believe the new POLO 77TSI 5 door is made in South Africa, and I can first hand say it is a fantastic car that lives up to the hype! Build has been spot on and no issues Im aware of yet.
But in saying that I have "heard" that the MKV GTI's did in fact have some different qualities between the South African (5-door?)and German Built (3-Door?) cars..
That last point is just what i have been told by 2 different people - Im sure others can chime in on how accurate that is

Once you are acquainted with the history of the GTI, you'll understand why.
I just think that it is a very narrow (pointlessly so) definition.
It also ignores seminal hot hatches like the Talbot Sunbeam (RWD) and the car that came before the GTI but was definately a hot hatch, the BMW 2002tii Touring.

Like I said that GTI is considered incorrectly as the father of all hot hatches but it is the template by which they are pegged against (industry included).

BTW, the Talbolt and BMW is were also 3Drs.
I wasn't disagreeing with you. I was disagreeing with the assessment of what a hot hatch was!
