VW Scirocco for Australia. Any Golf R buyers thinking of swapping?

Accordingly to the Sydney Morning Herald drive section April22-24,2011 it is reported(quoting Anke Koeckler) that the Scirocco coupe will "go on sale in the first quarter of next year"(2012).Further it states"The three-door version of the Golf R will be pensioned off to make way for the newcomer",pricing similar to the three-door Golf R"well above the Golf GTI.
I have to wonder why VW introduced the three-door Golf R only to have to "pension"it off so soon?Was this a quick buck exercise before the known introduction later of the Scirocco?Would I feel a tad peeved if I had bought a 3 door Golf R?Perhaps.

I suspect you're reading a bit much into this. VW wasn't initially planning to bring the 3-door R to Australia at all, but vocal criticism of that plan by potential customers (including many from this forum) forced them to reconsider. No doubt the Scirocco falls into the same basket - not initially planned for import, but specific market pressures have swayed them. And they've no doubt looked at the number of sales of 3-door Rs as a percentage of the total, and decided to save some coin by dropping it (as they now have another model thet they can claim as a legitimate alternative for the majority of potential buyers).

I'm looking at a Scirocco seriously. My R32 will be four in September and by the end of the year will have probably got to 100K Km so I've been starting to look around. All due respect to the Golf R but in either 3 door or 5 door it just didn't feel like enough of a change to what I have - just couldn't get too excited about it.

So I've been pretty much heading down the Megane RS 250 path until news on the Scirocco came out in the last few weeks. Need to check it more but right now very interested. I've seen a non R Scirocco - when I was in Europe a couple of years ago - and I like it. I was pretty much ready to walk away from VW as they didn't have something that "grabbed" me and now it looks like they may have. Will see once I can get my hands on more info.

As for the whole 3dr vs 5dr thing? I've alternated - 4 door Sti, then a three door 350Z then a five door R32 and now looking for a 3 door - bugger all difference between them to be honest, they each have their pluses and minuses. Certainly wouldn't get too excited about one being better than the other.

I think if a customer still wanted to buy a 3Dr R (after the Rocco has been introduced), the dealers would still be able to order one in- just like they were able to order TR Rs even though it isn't a colour that is VWA sanctioned. I mean, what dealer in his/her right mind would turn away a potential sale?

I've been turned away from VW before... but it was when the MKV GTI first game out and there weren't any 3 door MKV's in the country.

Yup. However the rocco doesnt really look exactly like the current series golf anyway.
