Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • And that right there is the problem. A simple letter from each person that has this problem to VWA explaining to them the problem and how it perhaps doesn't affect your cars service life but surely affects your driving experience.

We have to stand together and fight VWA or they will not do anything about it.

If anyone else is interested in raising this issue with VWA this is the person I emailed - Anke.Koeckler@volkswagen.com.au

Nah - there's no possible way for it to only be $15k.

The Stage III kit is $10k. But then to use the suspension and brakes from the APR GTI Motor Tuner Challenge Car, you're looking at $3400 for suspension and $4500 for the alcon brakes. That may seem excessive, but you can't just double the power and torque and then skimp on the suspension and brakes! So you're already up for $17,900. The Motor Tuner Challenge car also had full exhaust, diff, clutch, sway bars, wheels and tyres (because the larger brakes required may not fit in the Detroit wheels). Taking their total up to $24,395.

There would also be $1 to $2k in labour there, depending on who you get to do it, and how many of the supporting mods are done. You then have the engineering costs applicable for your state.

Don't get me wrong, it's a fantastic package and looking at the other tuning options that were present, it's quite good value, but I find it hard to understand that the rattle could seriously be that annoying that it would be your incentive to go to a Stage III setup.

      • Back on topic, since the EA888 is shared with Audi, is anybody aware of any reports of the same problem being reported by Audi owners?

        • plenty of talk about the noise in A3s and TTs..

          • Hmm, Is it really that impossible to live with or are we just being a bit snobby?

The BMW M3 E46 is WELL known to have the exhaust rattle (to the point where at low revs, most 46 M3's sound like they are fatally broken), and also My Clio Renaultsport 182 used to do it (as did many other 172/182's as it was a common fault due to normal engine movements and pulsations where the exhaust experiences the point of its natural resonance between about 2000 - 3000rpm).

            If you hate it so much, VW does need to acknowledge that a fix is needed. When I took my 182 into an exhaust shop to get the Milltek Fitted, I asked about the rattle, and he reccommended a braided exhaust connector;

Looks like that, and the braids absorb any vibration from extractors to exhaust. Cost about $100. Maybe Vw need to offer this to those who are really in the ***** about this..

            • There already is a braided flex joint in the stock MK6 GTI exhaust though. Like there was in the MKV.

              • Strange then. Perhaps the flex joint still just isn't enough for the vibration from the engine. VW need to trial larger ones?

                    • I also have this noise in my Jetta. Even though you know it's not causing harm, you can't help but think it's doing something bad as it's simply not a healthy sound.

My mum's Tiguan also makes this sound.

                      • GTI Rattle!!!

Hi Guys, also how this noise with my new GTI. Been back to VW Osborne Park twice and the last visit I spoke to the Service Manager. Basically got the same answer saying VWA won't do anything about it, as it is a characteristic of the car.....Bull****. He told me that they were having a service managers meeting over east late november and that this was one of the things they would be discussing and to come back in early december and he would let me know what the outcome is, so i will wait till then.
At the time i also asked why the two demo's i test drove did not make the noise, but he could not give me an answer and why they did not tell me about the so called characteristic of the car at the time of purchase.
If nothing is resolved i told him I would persist...as we all should, and that I would get Consumer Protection involved if they cannot resolve this issue.
YOU DON'T BUY NEW CARS WITH RATTLES!!!!!!

                          • I feel your pain! I've found my first experience with VW to be most disappointing. Especially my interactions with VWA. I've had the same response as you and everyone else about this noise. I've always had Honda's prior to this and never had one problem with any of my cars. Such a pity, the GTI's a fantastic car to drive, but I find it seriously difficult to believe that they won't/can't rectify this noise in a brand new car.

I'd love to hear back from if you have any joy with vw after the "service managers" meeting.

i had a vibrating tranny problem with my wifes 05 touareg till i changed dealers..
did the ring and email everyone in vw land, till someone told me maybe i try a different dealer..
fixed after 3-4 months of bring the car in, and we will need it for a day or two scenario..

                              • Just get a retune and TBE and you really won't be concentrating on trying to hear a noise..

It's just the design, not doing any damage, there is nothing wrong with your car and this is all blown out of proportion .
