Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • I think I have it, but I'm not sure. Worse when it's colder I find. Too many other noises coming from my car to notice this one

My squeaky bush is starting to drive me mad!! That's bush league...that's what that is....

    • I deliberately drove my car this arvo with the radio off to try and hear the noise. There was nothing obvious at all.

Hey Tux. Tell you what, for a small fee I'll swap your abnormal Golf that is missing the "characteristic" noise, for my normal one (according to VW) which has the "characteristic" noise in abundance!

        Cheers,

so far on my 9 month old GTI, the ac compressor and water pump have had to be replaced. The water pump took 2 days and the dealer didn't offer a loan car. the dealer hasn't fixed the squeaks in the front doors yet and after our disagreement over oil 'sweat' on the turbo...
          Hi mfl,

About that "oil sweat" - is it on the turbo inlet?

Before water pump was replaced, did you have any changes in the coolant level and was it (w/pump) broken suddenly or...?

"oil sweat" on the turbo inlet - is it normal?

          thank you

            Hi mirsad,

The coolant warning came on while driving and on checking the overflow tank it was low and hence the warning light. the engine temp. stayed normal and there was no obvious leak. but I needed to top up the overflow tank every couple of days. a pressure test showed up the leak from the waterpump and it was replaced.

as for the oil leak I had my car serviced at VW Village and they said there was an oil leak from the turbo, and the dealer said it was 'oil sweat' and was normal. there are no oil drops under the car. the dealer said when there are bring it back. I will need to get the car up on a hoist to see it for myself.

              Thank You mfl,

2 months ago, coolant in my GTI was on minimum (it was serviced 4 months before that) toped it up (exactly between min and max) and 2 days ago it was again on min. (2 months 3500km and about 200ml of coolant) - no stains

"oil sweat" - what I assume is "oil sweat" (no stains in my garage) is noticeable on the part of induction system (black tube) attached to the Turbocharger Inlet - it is not dripping it is just oily - I understand GTI is different than 90 TSI - but that area is clean and dry on our 90TSI.

They all probably have it, but some people worry about the sound more than others J.

I think to confirm, perhaps two people in the same city can get together and compare cars. I've met up with MIRSAD before and our rattles were identical. I'm not sure of anybody in Perth who has tried to listen for the rattle but can't detect it, but there appear to be a couple in NSW.

                    Cam,

if you're coming over to Lane Cove way then maybe I should come for a drive with you in your car so I can hear the noise. I'm worried that I might be living in denial and that I have the noise. Surely I would hear it if it's that bad... I'm serious about the drive though..

Lol... if you can't hear it, why would you want someone to point it out for you?
The issue is not a mechanical fault which is going to cause your car to fail... it's just an annoyance. So you have nothing to gain but frustration by having it pointed out to you!

                        Hi Tux,
I'm pretty busy over the next few weeks, but if I'm over that way I'll PM you to exhange details.
I think Coreying has a point though that if by some chance you're missing the noise then that's not a bad thing...

Don't worry mate, I have thought of that but I would like to know whether I'm going deaf! Seriously though, I'm sure that if VW are saying it's 'normal' and mine (and some others) don't have the noise then it points to a fault doesn't it?

                            • So... has anyone had any luck with showing local dealers the VWoA TSB on the rattle? What was the result of your visit Murphy?
