MK6 GTI - Rattle upon acceleration - Resolved via TPI: 2021062/7
I picked up my MY11 GTI on Saturday and I'm just loving the car so much like everyone else. It's just wow.. this thing is so quick. I've never owned or sat in a turbo-powered car before until I test drove and bought one but this car really goes quick. I just love the pop sound on dsg changes and I'm already addictive to it - being Easter holiday and double demerits I was really trying hard to not overspeed but I was already doing 80km/h on second pop. It feels so good when you hear the two pops continuously. I had 19km on the clock when I picked up my car and it had that metalic raspy rattles that sounded like coming from the back underneath or maybe it was coming from the front - my gf and her friend also heard it which was a bit embarrasing as I picked up the car the day before. So same here. I get it at around 2400-2800rpm on a moderate/fast acceleration but not on pushing it down really hard. It happens when starting from standstill and also noticed when I was driving in D6 at around 110km/h on freeway - when I gently press on around 2400-2600rpm the same but weaker noise is generated. Not a huge issue to affect my enjoyment but hope this will not cause any damage to the car during my ownership. I'll also book my car in to get it checked out and get a written report if possible. Btw the whine/whistle at the low rpm as I start accelerating is a turbo making the noise? I firstly thought it was cops which made me let my foot off the accelerator and the noise was gone. I only then realised it may be the turbo whistle. Yeah that was a cool sound.

Went to the dealer the other week and took a MY11.5 GTI manual for a test drive. I tried to make the thing rattle focusing on the 2400-2900rpm range. As hard as I tried I could not get a peep out of it. It had about 150kms on the clock. Fingers crossed mine won't rattle either.
It seems that it affects many or all 2.0 TSI engines. The first forum lifts the actual VW bulletin from another site:
Judging by the number of pages on the 2nd forum, it's quite widespread and certainly distracting enough for owners to bring it up. Perhaps if enough people complain, VW will be forced to actually address the problem. Those with cars on order, too, should register their concern.
Mine actually occurs from slightly lower revs - around 2000 - and it's loud enough for passengers to notice if the stereo is off or low, especially with the windows down.
Is that report given to customers on request? I have recently done a test drive with a mechanic at VW service centre but wasn't aware if I could get a written report like that.

Some dealers did give it to their customers. Others just showed them. Others just tell them about it. Others just tell them the advice that it gives (i.e. it's a characteristic, there is no harm and nothing to fix).

I see. I will ask them if I can get one then. Yeah that's what the mechanic told me and he said it's just very annoying and that I don't need to register the problem/finding with VW as they will be sending out letters if there is an official fix. I just wanted to have it ready for later when the time comes to sell the car as it would be easier to just show the buyer that it's a characteristic than asking them to look up this site or seek advice from VW dealers.

Characteristic my arse. It's quite simply really. Did the engineers design the engine to have the rattle? No. Is the rattle consistent across all cars? No. Then it is a quality defect. Quality is determined by the customer and not vw.

So since the quality is determined by you and not VW, what are you doing about it?
Btw I noticed the rattle is getting louder these days. I will take it in to see if anything else is loose around exhaust area when eventually unbearable. The mechanic did say something like wastegate actuator rod noise can be heard in exhaust area as well and worse on going up a hill. I've told him I also had it when cruising on highway at those revs and he knew about it too.
