Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Northstar VW. Unfortunately they've not got the part in stock so I'll have to head back there next week.

          • Yeah they are not fixing it in the factory :-/

Oh well, at least we know what it is and it can be easily fixed. At least we don't need to have the turbo replaced or anything..........

I got that response, I'd be looking for a another service department.

              • Corey (or anyone who can explain this for me)
I understand this is factory researched and endorsed fix - my logical mind however does not understand how a clip that puts pressure on the actuator rod joint (to suppress the rattle) cannot in some way have an affect on the freedom of movement of that joint. If this is the case, would that not then affect the action of the wastegate to limit (even in a small way) the closing and (God forbid) opening of the wastegate?

Short answer is no. It applies a force at the lateral motion of the joint. I might liken it to tightening loose wheel nuts - it doesn't stop the wheels from spinning freely.

The information about dealerships who are co-operative and perform the fix is useful for those seeking to get something done about a noise that can be extremely frustrating (and concerning considering it is essentially a metallic rattle). Information about dealerships continues to be useful as there remain dealerships that continue to be obstructive, particularly Skoda dealerships. For owners who are still battling to get the problem addressed, the issue of locating a suitable dealer is not dead. Additionally, there's been no long term outcomes documented that I can locate anywhere for the "factory clip fix", hence my question.

                        • Well my new GTI (build May 11) - has the rattle after 400km

I have to take it back to , Hoepfully it doesn't take too much convincing to get them to fix it.

                          • Is there any way to adjust the clip? Does it fall off easily? It has been a few weeks since the clip was fitted and it never completely got rid of the rattle. Now it seems to be getting louder and is almost like it was before the clip.

TPI: 2021062 went to TPI: 2021062/9 on 6th Jan 2012. Still not prodcution action. Update was to include more 4 motion vehicles information.

There are warnings not to overstretch the clip. Could be the techie fitting went to far opening it over the rod/hinge bolt as it was fitted.

There are dimensions. Max. Opening of the clip during fitting is 14.0 mm. When fitted it should be 10.5 mm open. These dimensions are between the upper and lower parallel faces of the clip.
