  • Hey jrgti,

Good work on the video just wondering if there is a bit of a delay on shifts from 1st to 2nd gear? It sounded like it was slipping or something? Arent the gear shifts in S mode supposed to be lightning quick.

    • It's a GTI... it was holding the gear whilst the wheels were catching up with the engine
This is a common occurence on modified GTI's / crappy roads.

      • That has always occured when ever I'm using S mode. Like Corey has mentioned, probably due to crap roads but my golf isn't modified though. Another factor could be the tyres as I have the stock Bridgestone RE050 (not the RE050A's as these are apparently better). The slight loss of speed is always accompanied with wheel spin.
I've tried to overcome the problem by manually shifting the gears but I've yet to master that and still achieve a good time. It is a real challenge I have to admit. Other times I've only floored the accelerator once it shifts into 2nd gear but I've never been able to get the result I wanted.
This is the best acceleration I've achieved so far having to put the foot down all the way from launch control and it was the first attempt of the night. Glad I had it recorded.
Hoping eventually I'll be able to change my wheels to lighter alloys that are slightly wider (8inch compared to 7.5 inch Denvers) to provide more surface area grip and change my tyres to maybe Michelins? to alleviate the delay.

        • In my opinion the electric throttle on these things make it hard to feel exactly how much throttle is applied not to mention the slight delay at part throttle inputs. Thats why generally your best to just mash the pedal!

Isn't that how you're supposed to drive away? Wondered why my fuel consumption was up around the 14L/100 mark...

            • Speaking of consumption, the other day my vintage MKV gave me 6.9L/100 from Hoppers to the inner city... was some careful driving and slip streaming going on though! Must be the light wheels

It's do-able but so damn boring!

Ater catching up with a fellow dubber who almost fell over at my consumption figures (PASHN8 who drives like a girl) and being empty last sunday and too lazy to fill up, I tried for a super economy run. I got it down to 8.9 over about 70km's with about 1/4 freeway. Was the most miserable driving experience ever. May as well have bought a yaris if I wanted to do it everyday hehe.

                • Lol I must admit I enjoyed the challenge! Planning when to coast depending on traffic, rolling up hills and tail gating anything big and square Would do my head in every day though but was a challenge, most days I drive like a mad man... a SAFE mad man, following road rules... kind of.

                  • Yeah - the best I can get out of my R is around the 8's as well. I just don't think it's possible to actually get the R to meet it's "Highway" figure. I'm not a hypermiler or anything, but I've always been able to exceed the stated figures on my Polo GTI and MKV Golf GTI

i'm regularly getting better than the specified 7.5 combined cycle, its a little harder with the K04 and extreme tune now, but cruising to work in flowing traffic will get me into the high 6's.

                      • The DSG doesn't "coast" as well as a true manual - I think that maybe it's the friction from having oil-bathed clutches, but I'm not entirely sure. It's still worlds apart from a traditional auto in that respect.

But also, the AWD system plays a huge part in the difference between the GTI and the R, as you're now proving. You now have a K04 as well, so we can't just blame it on that. The fact that you can get high 6's yet it's a struggle to get mid-high 8's on the R shows that the extra ~125kg and the drive train losses of AWD are a substantial factor.

Whilst many people believe that the Golf R is a "FWD car" until it needs the additional grip and switches to AWD mode, the fact that the Haldex coupling is at the rear of the car means that the prop shaft is always being driven. Thus there is always the rotational weight of the prop shaft causing additional drive train losses, and therefore higher fuel consumption, regardless of whether you're pushing the pedal down enough to utilise the AWD or not.

                        • The R would be awesome with the 7th Gear on the FWY

                          • FYI, our stage 3 Golf GTI recently did the trip to Wakefield for the Motor test. Our driver was a P Plater (with exemption) so the car was driven religousily @ 100kmph on cruise for the whole trip.

It did the entire journey (1173 kms) on one tank of fuel (they reckon it was running on fumes into Goulburn). Assuming that the cars capacity is 55 litres, that made the run 4.7 litres per 100.

Not bad for 385hp - And it accelerates pretty good too!

                            • Guy, do you mean your Stage 3 Golf R? Or your Stage 3 Golf GTI?
I thought you sold the R? And that efficiency is far far ahead of anything anyone has ever reported for the R.
