Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Robby, I would buy the time - stock ones are running 5.2 seconds, so 4.68 will be easy to achieve (well relatively!). The G tech pro is a very accurate device as well. It looks straight up that the Golf R is quicker than the S3.

Anyway, in Motor magazines tuner challenge, your car will be tested by the journalists, so all the results of the 30 odd cars will be laid bare - no favourites. That's one test I wish I had the DSg in the R for!

FLM, I see if I can get the data box over to you somehow!

Anyway, I think we need to split this thread to "Golf R acceleration & performance data" as my thread is becoming a little overloaded!

my car is a DSG 5 door sportsback.

theoretically my weight should be identical to a 4 door Golf R. the power should be theoretically the same between both cars. i have the latest gen haldex as your car being a MY10 build S3. my car with cold air intake and stage 1 tune makes 185kw and about 345Nm at four wheels which is 249kw and probably 400+Nm at the fly wheel . My car has lighter wheels than OEM by about 5-6 kilos per corner.. and massively lighter brakes than OEM jobbies by about 15 kilos per corner MINIMUM. so all up that should equal some pretty good acceleration times and i cant even close to 4.6sec with that setup.

either the golf r comes with even more power than stated... or the gearing ratio is significantly different to the S3...or the APR is one hell of a super tune!

your car is matching a TTRS for acceleration.. thats pretty impressive... if that is the case. im just saying with those numbers there could possibly more than meets the eye.

robby_jai, is your S3 manual or DSG?
        Sportback or 3 door?

5.2 seconds for Golf R?? I thought i read in the mags and other stats that the quoted figure for the Golf R was 5.6 seconds??? am i misreading something here? I know the GTECH Pro is pretty accurate.

How do you know my cars in the hot tuner challenge? i sorta been keeping it quiet im sure the results will be very interesting if you're entering that stage 3 monster of yours... and i think there will be very few cars in the category which will even come close to your car

That'd have to be a manual right? If not, I think they need to read the owners manual on how to use the DSG properly. Even on a wet B road, Autocar managed to get a DSG R to do 5.7 on 3 consecutive attempts in their manual vs DSG comparo video.

now that sounds pretty close to manufacturer claims.

for a Golf R to get 4.68sec for the 0-100km/h with just a stage 1 tune is sounding quite unusually quick... considering motor magazine last year.. in their hot tuner shoot out.. had 2 modified 335i twin turbo and they were pumping out 300kw+ and 500Nm and they only managed 4.8 seconds for the sprint from memory.

granted they are slightly heavier cars.. by only 150kilo but their power/torque advantage would have negated that...

so im struggling to understand how a golf r can achieve that. dont get me wrong they are great cars and have massive potential to modify... but 4.68 with just a stage 1 tune im willing to bet is not repeatable.. or theres more to it.

August issue of Motor has a Golf R/Evo X comparison.
                          Golf R ran 0-100 in 5.37[DSG]
Hot Tuner will run over three issues,as there are three classes, and too many cars for one issue!
Yeah Robby I''ll see you in about 4 weeks at Eastern Creek.
                          Cheers

surely the 335i being a RWD and the R being 4WD gives the R an advantage on take off?

especially when there is that much torque being pumped out.

                              VW Golf R: Tuning - autobild.de

At the bottom of the article it shows some stats. The Rothe tune looks to have achieved 4.3 second 0-100 km/h and a 12.62 second 1/4 mile.
