Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Pump / motors / fans run after switching ignition / car off

After turning the engine off in my GTI a pump or motor runs for about 5 mins, is this an electric water pump or something to cool the engine down?

    Does not do it everytime.

Sounds pretty normal a lot of cars do this. My old Accord used to run the radiator fans for a few mins after you turned it off on a hot day.

Fans can run on after shutdown and so can an electric water pump that runs the coolant in reverse to cool the turbo. Both only run when required.

This information is contained in the manual as well IIRC.

Fan still runs after engine switch off (2.0 TDI)

I don't know if this has been asked before, on my 2010 Golf 2.0 TDI I have noticed on 2 occasions that the fan (front of engine) is still running after the car ignition is switched off and this can last up to 5 mins, I know the engine does make the odd noise or two when the engine is turned off anyway but is this normal for the fan still to be running.
Has anybody else noticed this, is it specific to the TDI's or is there a problem.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

          It's normal.
Just make sure the fan turns off after a little while.

Thanks for that I've Googled it as well and its something to do with the particulate filter regeneration what ever that is.

It's perfectly normal operation and detailed in the owners manual IIRC. Many cars do this after shutdown to cool the engine.

I'm not sure what you read but it has nothing to do with the diesel particulate filter. Have a read of your manual as it will cover the DPF operation.

                    Taken from TDI club website

Fred's TDI Page. TDIClub.com. VW TDI Enthusiast Community

                    7. Q: My radiator fan started running loudly when I {turned off the engine or got off the highway onto surface streets or stopped at a light}. What's that about?
A: Your car was in the middle of regenerating the Diesel Particulate Filter (see Q4, above). The DPF gets very hot in this process. When your road speed drops too low to provide the required cooling, your fan turns on. When idling, you may also notice that your idle speed increases slightly to 900 RPM. You can prolly learn more than you ever wanted to know about DPFs and regens by reading these two threads:

The TSI motors have an auxiliary electric coolant pump that also runs for a few minutes after shutdown to keep coolant circulating through the turbo. This pump makes a faint 'buzzing' noise that you can hear after the radiator fan has turned off. It cools the turbo bearings down and stops them cooking the oil. Other manufacturers (eg Mazda) don't do this and consequently have a higher incidence of turbo failures.

i know this is going to be a stupid post but being a first time vw/turbo/GTI owner im unsure if its normal:

I noticed something last night which is the first time it has happened - i went on about a 45min drive (normal), engine temp was around the 95deg mark (normal), and came home; turned off the engine, got out of the car, and heard a noise coming from the engine bay that sounded like a fan..... i assume its the engine cooling itself after being switched off but it has never happened before....

is this a normal sound or is it wierd? why wouldnt it have happened before.... ive just hit over the 2000km mark so ud think it would of happened before this....

is this another case where the car is evolving?!

It's the turbo's fan. It's on a timer so the intercooler can cool down normally even with the engine off.

Unusual that you've only just noticed it now. The turbo fan on my car is switched on after virtually every drive, including the gentler ones (my oil tends to hover around the 97-99 degree mark in usual driving).

For the 12 days I've had my GTI, only once did the fan stay on after I switched the car off and this was not after one of the longer drives BUT that particular day was warmer than the rest. Didn't check the oil temp though.
This cooling down period is expected of a turbo car as mentioned by teodeh and in other topics in this forum but I find it a bit inconsistent of when it actually decides to 'activate'. Worth paying attention (myself included) to the oil temp as AdamD have suggested.
