  • My parents swear by Subarus. And they work perfectly for their needs.

Unlike a Tiguan they are actually usable for light off road work (better AWD system mainly) and are super reliable.

It's not hype and marketing. If anything, I would say that the label of hype and marketing is better aimed at VW.

    • I used to swear by Subaru Forester

      Times change.

Purely back on topic, I'd still rather be in my R than the STI (which we considered) on my 400-500 km weekly commute and interstate trips.

      Only my opinion of-course.

      • Your experience wasn't so good.

No reason to declare them bad cars when the vast majority are pretty damn reliable and are continually shown as such in customer satisfaction surveys.

No Liberty is not a particulary nice looking car, granted, but all experiences I have to date have shown them to be very well made cars.

97 Liberty AWD that has been in the familiy since new has ticked up 360,000. Original engine, gearbox etc etc. One replaced CD player, slow left rear power window and 2 clutch replacements, as well as standard servicing. I don't think that is too shabby at all. Also have an 04 Outback that has just ticked over 220. One clutch on it is the only issue.

Actually, my Forester XT was not a bad experience overall, just that the GTI and R were and are so much better, even with their faults.

The Forester at least had some multipurpose function about it and that is why I bought it. The auto was crap though, ancient (and hasn't changed much in the current model)

Comparing the R to the STI or a GTI to a WRX (new models), I'd go with VW every time.

The Forester 2.0L engine was notoriously bad. The 2.5L was an improvement. However, the plastics were cheap , design was fugly on all except the previous model Liberty, drivetrain, gearboxes and mechanicals virtually unchanged for many years. They were good but it needs more than that to want to keep buying new ones.

Plenty of Falcodores as Taxis that turn over 200-300,000 kms as well, doesn't mean I would ever buy one for myself (although had plenty as company cars that were bulletproof plus three Subies, although two of them were dogs)

As for customer satisfaction surveys, please, as worthless as tits on a bull. The customer niche for most Subaru's is well known. I was there once, no longer.

I started saying the same thing ....I managed to get through three years with the GTI without touching it but the lure of a tune on the R is much much stronger

no I didn't was going to leave it a year, the car does perform amazingly well right now , the engine is silky smooth or is that the DSG I cant tell any more is still pulls like a train.

But after getting in that 11 second car.. Fcuk it..

And I no longer have my manual 06 Forester XT either thanks to meeting a cow at highway speed head on late at night when returning from a work site on the Western Downs. The impact and mess following the cow going over the roof and even crushing the windscreen was really something I hope never to experience again. The worst thing is I've lost a remarkably reliable, useful but fun car that was supposed to see out another couple of years. It had done 245,000km with nothing more than regular services and never an issue and was just about to have its rego renewed. I feel like I've lost a best friend and I don't know what to replace it with - a Tiguan might sound obvious but I just don't like the look of them, you will never see them in places I needed to take the Forester and after the recent experiences with our Golf, with oil consumption issues and the turbo needing replacing at the 45,000km service, I will never feel like I could trust it like I always felt with the Suby. (We have decided already that we won't be keeping the Golf outside the warranty.) That car had been to incredible places like across the Gibb River Road in the Kimberleys, out to Birdsville and up onto Big Red, through the Flinders Ranges (to me hardly remote or even challenging), across the Nullarbor return twice and over all sorts of back roads in Tasmania. It was just the most useful sort of car that could perform many roles under demanding conditions yet felt almost new to the end. Sure, not quite as classy as our Golf inside but certainly not crap, and to me it looked great and was always exciting and rewarding to drive. I have never bought the same car twice so I'm trying not to do the obvious thing and get a new XT. I would like to try a GTI but where is that clearance and AWD that I love and need, and like the WRX that has been tempting me, it won't tow. Anyway we are taking a few weeks of and heading off in the Golf and have a few decisions to make.

Gee I'm pissed that I couldn't see that Forester to the end of its life.

Sorry for the rant - back to the R. Heh, shame we couldn't put it on stilts and add a towbar hehe

Life is too short, just do it. I had APR stage 2 put on at 2000km (now 11K) and have never looked back, just love getting in the car every day.

                      Range Rover Evoque!
Saw one on the road last week and it looks awesome. Has the offroad ability that goes with the name too apparently. And unlike the Golf R, it's available in a 3 door!

What's the DSG behaviour like with Stage 1 and 2 ?

Where do you plan on getting the 15k service done ?

                        Cheers

No mate, I wanted to know which dealer/service centre (looking for mod friendly service depts up the east coast as we do a lot of interstate trips).

Any VW mechanic should know as soon as they run it that it has been modified ....if a DSG or engine or drivetrain issue develops they need to prove it was the cause to challenge the warranty but I'd rather not have to battle with a dealer when away on a trip if something goes pear shaped.

Code enhancement is an interesting term for a complete fuel remap using a non OEM flash
