Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

I personally disagree with ESP being able to be turned off on the public roads. I also understand that ESP will soon be a mandatory feature required by law on all new cars (VIC leading the way), so an option to turn this off is really never going to happen... and even if anyone figures out how to do it, they probably won't let anyone know due to legal and liability reasons.

But what I would like to see, is for cars with Sat Nav, the ability to turn off the ESP when you're NOT on the public roads. So when you're on a private road, or race track, etc, you can turn it off then. Kinda like how the Nissan GTR R35 removes it's limiters when it knows its on a race track etc.

Each to their own, but I find it intrusive sometimes.

And given the amount of unroadworthy ****boxes on the roads, me being able to turn ESP off doesn't really change much.

      • hehehe... if you're finding it intrusive, that's probably a good sign that you need to slow down a bit

        • I totally agree with having ESP on whilst driving on public roads and being a good law aibiding citizen most of the time...

As corey R mentioned for people like me who do track days and MC events it would be a great advantage to be able to take it off and truely drive the car to its potential.

              Shame though

I placed my order on 23 June 2010, and received my car on 29 November - so 5 months and 6 days.

Yeah that was my point, hell even half the grey import skylines etc are junk (and I've owned one).

Speaking of track days, wanna get out there but I'm thinking it might be a good idea to source some smaller wheels and rubber to use instead of destroying a set of 19's in a day. What size rim fits over the R's brakes? some 17's from a GTI etc might be a cheap way out/easy to source

                      • I'm not sure 17" rims would clear the calipers on the front axles.

Hmm figured as much. I haven't checked, but what size is the spare in the boot?

                          • The spare is a Continental T 125/70R18 99H inflated to 60psi

                            • if the R brakes are the same as the R32, then 17's like the denver will fit. hell, even my RS's cleared the brakes.

                              • I was originally going to get a MkVI GTI, test drove it, and it was good. But not amazing.

Coming from an 8L S3 it just lacked some of the wow factor to me, the feel of the turbo, the acceleration and the grip you get powering out of a corner.

I test drove an R and it really does tick all the boxes.
