Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

VAG state 0-100 of the R as 5.5 for DSG and 5.7 for the Manual.
VGA state 0-100 of the R as 5.7 for DSG and 5.9 for the Manual. So yes, VGA are accounting for the change in our spec level.

It depends on how the ECU tune has been created to reduce the torque. I've noticed on the UK site that max torque for the R there is 2500rpm+. Yet here it is 2400rpm+. So it's likely that the torque curve is similar from low revs until 2400rpm & 330NM and then ours just flats our whereas their's keeps going to 2500rpm & 350NM and then flats out.

A Stage I tune will help helps with low end torque and drive ability.
A Stage II tune with a good quality down pipe will really help with lag reduction and low end torque.

You have to at least insure the car for what you paid for it.

Anyone who insures their Golf R for "Market Value" is insane. Even if you have a "New for old" for 1 to 4 years, you are taking a huge risk. Almost all the new for old policies have some type of conditions such as the replacement "must be in the country" or "must be available within 90 days" etc. Considering the waits we've had and how unique most of our cars are, due to the plethora of options, you have to assume that you won't be able to take advantage of the "new for old" and will therefore have to reorder the car yourself.

I've actually chosen to insure my Golf R for the "RRP with onroads" price for my spec of Golf R. I got a great deal when I purchased mine, and just in case I couldn't get that deal again, I've insured it for the full value without discount.

That also gives me some "padding" to cover any accessories and mods I have on the car.

        • Silvrfox, photo taken in showroom has been posted. I may not take delivery tomorrow, dealership has some work to do, passenger side leather on the seat itself isn't right, and I sense will be point of discussion. Curious, why the deadline of 6:00pm?

I am a Programme Manager.. if you don't supply a deadline it doesnt get done or introduce a sense of urgency .. 6:00PM was reasonable I felt

I agree with Cory_R, with replacement or 'New For Old' policy, the insurer will endeavour to replace with same car and specs but what are you going to drive during the 6 months wait... NRMA, at list, could't provide me with an answer or a rental car for that matter.

I've taken an 'Agreed Value' policy with NRMA with $3K above my purchase price, that way I keep my options open, in the worst case senario.

Another point, if you have a Lease or HP on the car, chances are that in the first 1-2 years (depending on the term and the residual) the payout figure will be higher than the purchase price of the car. you should request a Payout Schedule from your finance company and insure the car accordingly. Some finance companies offer 'Gap Insurance', which is the difference between the Sum Insured and the Payout Figure.

              Hope this helps

              • It has all been most helpful, this is an outright purchase so I don't have the lease/hp issue..I wont take the new for old policy but an agreed value.. thanks guys

                • lol SilvrFoxx, What would I know about leather work, but a quick fix I don't think is possible. We've all waited so long for these cars and the natural desire is to take quickly, sort problems out later... not this little black duck. A few more days to sort out isn't going faze me in the slightest... For now, Vader is safe in the showroom. second tint, Fusion and Bluetooth still to be supplied.
Trust you don't take sched. approach everywhere.

                      • Ok so I just worked out how to use launch control.....
I was always trying to hold 3000rpm myself, then release brake and floor accelerator and it would always bog down and suck.
But you don't have to hold the rpm yourself, you just put your foot flat to the floor and it holds the rpm for you, then when you release the brake you already have full throttle and it slips the clutch perfectly so it doesn't bog down at all.
The launches are incredible now! Very impressed! I can see how the dsg's are getting much better times than the manuals. The launch plus quick gear changes would be very hard in a manual.

                        • So just a quick question

Would Bilstein PSS10's / KW V3 Coilovers for the MK6 Golf GTI work on the MK6 Golf R? I know they'd probably fit, but what about spring rates etc?

                          • I wonder how often you'd be tempted to use Launch Control at a set of traffic lights when another hoon is next to you?
Some say he was the Stig... all we know is that he drives a VW Transporter.

not very tempting to be honest. Why bother? Whats there to prove? Chances are he's in a crap car anyway
