Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled
After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.
Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before.
We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Its not fitted because the R has its exhaust in the way! Plus the boot floor is different to the standard golf due to the diff so it probably has no fitting for the tow ball anyway. The foam tool holder is just a generic piece of foam across all models.
Do what I did, find a usefull tool and use that spot to keep it in the car. I have even fitted jumper leads into mine!

Tried the launch control procedure just for kicks tonight. Popped it into S, TCS off, left foot brake and stepped on the accel expecting it to hold at ~3.5k RPM.....except it went way past, revved to 6k before I backed off
I didn't think it had a DSG tune (upshift/downshifts not that quick unless fanging it) but since I'm the third owner, its hard to say - is there any way to find out if it's got a DSG tune without taking it into the workshop?

It can happen. When you repeat the process, don't floor the throttle - feed the power in very gently (and make sure you don't feel the car pushing against the brake, which would suggest L/C hasn't enabled for one reason or another), and as long as the revs rise cleanly you should be able to hold it at around 3,000.
Slow accel: stopped at 2.5k rpm one time, but every other time revved way past
mashing accel: revved to redline every time.
I confirmed it wasn't dropping into neutral either, as when I let go of the brakes at 5k (with only light throttle) it jolts ahead : (

remove ECU tune temporarily to see if this is the culprit and then if it still does it update DSG firmware. There's no way it would be a DSG tune unless some madman had been let loose on it

The cloth seats do seem to grip you better though and its not just due to the material used either, you seem to sink a touch further into the seat in the cloth trimmed cars.
They're both very good though
