Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • I've got one, but haven't installed it yet. Miro (Transporter) had a look at my GTI this morning and suspects it is actually possible to get to the CAN gateway and install it via the dashboard (from the compartment to the right of the driver's knee). Trouble is it's a little tight in there, and you'd need to disconnect/reconnect the leads with one hand. Still, worth considering as an alternative to going in underneath the wipers.

I'll update when I get mine installed in a few weeks - if no-one else provides more info in the meantime.

      • Picked up my R a couple of days ago and very impressed with the car so far.

Is it possible to turn off the Daytime Running Lights (DRLs) on the R? I cant find it in the MFD settings and this link I found doesn't work either:

HOW TO: Turn the Daylight Running Lights (DRL's) on and off

Is it possible through VAGCOM and has anyone successfully turned them off?

        • I thought you could via the MFD.. but I like them so never looked

          • You can't disable them through MFD or by any "normal" means. Turning the headlight switch to off keeps them on, so does Auto and On. Turning the switch to parking lights only dims them, while also turning on the rears.

Congrats on the new car, by the way. Was it a factory order?

Yes you can. In the "Lights and Vision" option on the MFD settings.

Silly question and prob not the best for this section but what the best offset for the R? Do we still go for the +45 like on the gti to get them flush?

In my car, there is absolutely no menu item to change DRL under lights and vision nor any other settings heading.

In my opinion, the 19x8 +50 wheels are flush, but the VWR aftermarket wheels are 18x8 +45, if that's any help. I've ordered a set of Enkei PF01 18x8 ET45 for the track...

I have the 19" wheels on now but want to drop down to 18" but not sure if I should stick to the+50 or go to+45 I don't want the to rub but don't want to tuck under aswell

                        • There's so much more to consider, like if you're going to lower it. But even with a modest drop, you won't have any rubbing issues on an 18x8 +45, even if you wrap it in 235/40. It's if you increase the overall diameter above 25.5 inches, that you'll run into problems.

                            Interesting. I checked this morning.

SETTINGS > Lights and Vision >

Then uncheck the box that's says DRL or something like that.

                            My R is a MY12. What's yours? Maybe a little different.

Could be in anticipation of DRLs becoming mandatory on new cars in some countries soon, Australia included
