Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

GTI - was selling it, just out of warranty, dealer talked VW into a goodwill replacement (slightly jerky in reverse). Figured it would help sell the car (it did)

R- had one false neutral, told dealer, immediate replacement. I didn't even ask for it. Apart from that one time (which was really my fault looking back) it was flawless. Still is.

That's good news. One would think VAG would have all new DSG bugs/failings sorted by now??

I did around 85,000 in the GTI.

DSG never had any real issues

The R's (as I said, mine) is faultless. D mode for me is much better than it was in my GTI. I combine paddles with D mode and usually S mode on the way home. Usually once a day I use manual mode when I want done fun.

S mode is good on mine, not as manic as the GTI

The only thing I dislike is the FBW setup on initial throttle response. I'm going to fix that though

Agree, how are you going to fix?

            • Sometimes, things are best left unsaid.

Irrespective, there are a few ways to resolve the FBW delay/tardiness ....

              • For the sake of $300 for a Sprintbooster or even the D1 Throttle Controllers which are about $180 i wouldnt bother trying to fix the drive by wire delay any other way.

Almost everyone who has one of these devices says that they work. Personally i have a Sprintbooster and it has certainly "sped" up the resonse, although there is still some present.

I must say that the delay seems to be more noticeable on DSG cars than manuals.

                  • Thanks all - I'm glad to hear that the behaviour of the DSG in both shifting and take-offs is pretty much normal for this generation of gearbox.

The more noticeable lag at take-off after the tune isn't really that something is wrong, but more that the increased power once the car does get going makes the pause all the more obvious. I'm sure my 1.9 TDI Caddy suffers the exact same DSG lag, but with sweet bugger all power it just seems like the whole thing is slow rather than just the DSG.

In any case I had the APR DSG tune applied today, so I tried D mode for a few kms after the tune just to see what it was like. I'm not sure how quickly the stock DSG tune likes to engage higher gears but I quickly got tired of D putting me in 5th at 50/60kph so switched back to M. Will see how my wife likes the tune as she's more likely to use D rather than the paddles.

Almost 1000kms on the car now - about 800km of highway driving and 200km of city. Averaging 9.6l/100km which seems pretty good.

Now to spend a few weeks getting used to the car before the stage 3 components arrive and the tinkering can begin.

                    • Soundaktor gone!

Only pulled the plug after it developed an annoying electrical interference type crackle. Had completely forgotten it existed but a quick google search and some stuffing around with a too short screw driver and it is done.

Definitely quieter. Turbo more noticeable. Motorway driving more relaxed. I do sort of miss the noise it made but I couldn't live with that rattle.

                      Have many people unplugged theirs?
