Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • I've been told it's about 6 hours (not that they had a Golf R or anything quick). The western end can sometimes be closed due to water or erosion issues.

    • There's a route planner for the GOR here:

      Route planner, Victoria, Australia

We did it about 3 years ago in my XR5 as part of our "Half way round Australia drive". We did from Ballarat to Mount Gambier in about 10 hours if my memory serves me correctly via the GOR including a well timed stop at the 12 Apostles just on sunset as well as a couple of other short stops along the way. There are some truely great driving roads in that area (in fact there are several great roads in the areas between Brisbane - Hobart- Adelaide - Brisbane). If I did it again I would probably do it a bit more lazily and spend the entire day doing the shorter part of the trip but stop at a few more places along the way. I noticed I seemed to "catch up " to slower traffic even without speeding and I think more frequent stops would have made the shorter driving stints in between even more enjoyable by allowing more open road. We went in July and surprisingly saw very few Police but I was told by a local that during holiday periods the road can be very heavily patrolled.

              • 15 km's was driven during the service??

                Hi Guys,

I left the car at the workshop for the 15,000km's service and during this time they have driven 15km's . I was just wondering if this is normal or excessive........

Hope they didn't launch control as I have never did it myself...

                  • It is normal for them to drive around the block as part of their inspection... or around a few blocks in your case.

                    • 15km seems a little excessive... but realistically there's probably not a lot you can do without photo evidence. I'd bring it up with the service manager politely, asking for a please explain. If you don't like their response, take your business elsewhere.

                      • Recent 45,000km service and they had driven 47km....yes that's 47km. And they also dented my door in three places (which is currently being fixed). Discussions with the service advisor centred around arranging for the door to be fixed so I forgot to query how they had clocked up 47km

That's just dodgy. No-one needs to test drive a car for 47km. They must've been using your car as the workshop taxi!

                            • I had 7kms on my car after the last service.

                              Seems reasonable imo

I thought 15km's is excessive....might buy the boys a case of VB's to thanks them for only taken it 15km's
