  • Mate, there is nothing anymore reliable than a German car for one simple reason. No car is any more reliable than the next anymore. In-built obselesence.

VW is shocking with reliability as many a multiple VW owner (like me) will tell you but most o us repeat offenders buy them because we like what the brand does with their cars, and why we spend so much money on making them better Don feel disheartened, it's all part and parcel of owning a VW unfortunately.

In regards to the motor, common worldwide failing of the 1.4tsi motor aside from oil consumption is torched and cracked pistons. Don't be surprised though if it is a new motor...

Your first and second paragraphs seem to be contadictions. Most people who have owned German and Japanese cars, especially at the same time will know which one is the more reliable and trouble free. And it's not the German. Great engineering and tasteful, classy design but something seems to go wrong in the production process or with component suppliers. And many times dealer attitude.

      • Well, as TopGear say, you can't be a true petrol-head unless you've driven an Alfa Romeo or Golf 118TSI.

        Oh wait, that's not right.

How so? I work every day with supposedly the most reliable vehicles on the market and frankly, they have rubbish build quality and nearly every one of them has gone back a minimum of twice under warranty and not for minor things, I'm talking whole turbo setups, full engines, cylinder heads, gearboxes, diffs etc.

Brand reliability just doesn't exist like it used to because cars have become -like most things in our consumerist society- a disposable item. Stuff breaks down because it's supposed to, it's just meant to do it after warranties run out

My first paragraph is to say that German cars are just as unreliable as any other car on the market because they're built to break, same as all the other vehicle manufacturers. I apologise for the confusion.

          • Plenty of Japanese cars with problems out there, but for the most part they aren't pushing the envelope with innovative designs and engines.

With change comes issues. Buy a car with nothing particularly inspiring and you might limit the components that you could potentially have problems with, but that's no guarantee.... And how boring would that be?

I am new and i join this forum because i found this thread about the harsh shuder at the 2nd gear with DSG7!
First of all i have a VW Scirocco 1.4 TSI 160hp with DSG7 it is MY2012.Before i buy it i was enthousiast about the DSG but then i do some search at the net and i found A LOT OF Problems!!! Anyway i love it and i bought it! I Have it 2 months and i have 3500km . All the car is PERFECT !!! DSG7 Perfect exept the Annoying noise(rattle) when i am with 2nd or 3rd gear and i am at rough road. Do your DSG7 do the same annoying rattle?? From my searchs i have see that all DSG7 have the same sound at rough road.

On topic now ... at the greek sciroccoclub there is a SAME THREAD as here!!! ''Harsh Shudder at 2nd Gear with DSG Gearbox'' From the start of the January of 2012 some VW Dealers call some users of DSG7 that a new Clutch Pack is out from VW so all the guys who have the problem with the harsh shudder with the DSG7 are now happy , its official there is a new Clutch Pack for DSG7 ,new material, new code, better clutch pack!Go and ask your dealer to contact with VW Germany !

Its true that vw have a new clutch pack for DSG7 ,because i go to my dealer to take some parts for a modification and i ask ''i hear that VW has a new Cluch pack for DSG7, is it true?'' answer: Of course ,but do you have problem? me: no i just ask...

So i hope to have the new clutch pack because mine is MY2012 . And also i hope that the new clutch pack will not have problems after 20.000km
              stay on topic guys!!
Here is the topic for the problem with the DSG7 ...
I quote again my post so all guys to see this !
Does anyone here ask the dealer for the new updated Clutch pack?
Here in Greece 2.000 DSG7 change clutch pack with the new one .... the last 3-4 monthes if you went to the dealer for clutch pack replace he told you to wait until the new one come...When the new one comes out all DSG7 with the problem change it ...

              • I had my clutch pack replaced about a month ago - I would assume that unless you have the shudder you are not going to get a replacement clutch.. Its not every car that develops the issue from what I understand.

                • I had my clutch pack replaced about 5 months ago (118TSI DSG7) because of the big shudder in 2nd. And by big I mean BIG.

Since then the mechatronics died, left me waiting for the thing to come from Germany for 2 weeks (over Christmas, nice one).

Today I picked up my car after 60k service and after complaining that there is a grinding noise in 3rd/4th gear when turning left at low revs, they advised me that the clutch pack needs yet another replacement, but I have to wait about 6 weeks, it's on back order now.

Suffice to say I had the dead engine at 15.000 km.

Yes, that's what they're doing, hence the 6 weeks wait.

                      • Don't know if anyone saw last week's TopGear USA but the Lamborghini Murcielago Roadster (S-tronic) had horrid jerking at low speeds - way worse than any DSG Golf.

                        • Well...
I had my clutches replaced under warranty 2 months ago and the shudder issue was solved.

On the weekend I went out shopping, jumped back in my car and went to drive off and the DSG wouldn't engage a gear. Tried disconnecting the battery and reset the ECU but it didn't help.

Called VW's road side assistance but had to wait 2 1/2 hours before a tow truck came and they booked a taxi for me.

                          Sounds like a mechatronics problem?

What protection do consumers have with 'Lemon cars'? has anyone contacted VW Australia directly and demanded car replacement or compensation of some type? (maybe a free extended warranty)

My car has only 3 months warranty left and with all these issue going on I don't want to be left holding the rotten egg.

Why should I be out of pocket for having to buy a replacement car?

I think most of you feel the same way I do about my Golf.
I love it! It drives so well - the design and engineering is ahead of it's competitors. I can't think of another car that I would like to own but if only I could feel confident with it again.

I'd love to hear from anyone that has taken this up with VW Aust and have been compensated.

                          • Is it just me or does a pattern seem to be emerging where if people get their clutches replaced they end up with more (serious) problems?

                            • Agree with Ryan, seems the clutch solves one issue but in the end the mechatronics need to be done as well.

I had a look on line about Lemon Laws but it doesn't really seem to cover the issues I've had, I LOVE my car when t's preforming as I expected a new car would.
Free extended warranty would be an interesting way to approach it.

                              • Don't forget that dealer in QLD that is offering heavily discounted extended warranty (national, checked it will be fine for me in VIC), the offer expires soon though.

Got my car booked in next week and if the service I receive is satisfactory I'll probably take them up on that offer. No point in me paying for extended 'bad' service.
