Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Ha! We could all drive Camrys! Only then is there reason to compare a 'turd vs a turd' or 'mine in smaller than yours!'

Just imagine the bigger smile on your face if you unplugged and just 'went for a drive' for no particular reason! See below.....

How right you are! My Sunday morning church looks like this, for no particular reason:

All you need to be happy when you've got a good drive like the R or the GTI is a stretch of nice road Have to say, we are blessed with amazing roads here in Adelaide!

        • Overall I'm finding the Golf GTI with DCC suspension a fine package straight off the showroom floor. For sure there's more sporty rides out there, but as an all-rounder, it's hard to go past the Golf GTI.

If I was to consider any upgrades for my GTI, not that I plan to, I would probably consider the following:

          1. Tyres.
          2. Lightweight wheels.
          3. APR alloy front lower control arms (to reduce unsprung weight).
          4. KW Dynamic coilovers.
          5. Limited Slip Diff (LSD).
          6. Big Brake Kit (2 piece).

Those upgrades would be it for the street.
For the track or targa, probably add ECU retune and larger intercooler to that list.
For now the Golf GTI is fine as a stock ride.

          Cheers
          WJ

          • I just like it that GTI/R32 drivers almost always gives my car a second look.

Any GTI driver who denies this is just lying through his/her teeth

                • Allright....enough of this GTi vs R rubbish. Each of us has our reasons why we chose whatever we chose - whether it be 3 door, 5 door, white, blue, red, a GTI or an R, DSG or manual etc etc.

If you want a real car, check out what i got to go for a drive in recently......absolutely fuc*ing hot piece of machinery.

Audi R8 V10 Spyder with the R-Tronic gearbox.....a mere $430,000 according to the price specifications tag in the glovebox. And for that money, you would think they would throw in sat nav and dynamic cornering lights....but they are extras!!!

This car was absolute porn. The blipping sound when you downshift is so obnoxiuosly loud and sounds fantastic.

Only happens with the MkVIs and R32s - MkVs GTIs are distinctive looking.

                        • Never ending argument

The FWD -v- RWD debate may be never ending. A bit like the Mid-Engined Cayman -v- Rear-Engined 911 debate.
Here's a video by Car & Driver, USA that sheds some interesting light on Mid-Engine -v- Rear-Engine debacle with some suprising results ... although I didn't see the 911 driver lifting off the gas during those any of the turns:

It does sound awesome....but I want to be able to do that myself! One reason why I went for manual over DSG.

Do the blip right and you know that you did it. Sounds even better than a computer doing it.

Here's a review of the Golf R from Road & Track Magazine, USA.
The Golf R looks like hitting the USA market at a starting price of around 31K.
The GTI in the USA starting price is about 23K with 27K being a driveaway price with few or no options.
