I dont know, golf gti owner here, and a great write up from white James at the start of the thread. Over the gti main attraction would be the greater traction on take off with four wheel drive. On the gti it's just too easy to axle tramp especially in the damp. The greater lag of the R James describes would bug the he'll out of me. A lot of dollars too for the R for what is basically a vw golf after all.

The R , I would order, starting at approx $57k on road (5dr DSG), would include ACC, 19 inch wheels, and those sport seats and I WOULD include Satnav if I'm spending that much, comes to about $70k.
I cant afford to spend $70k this time, HOPEFULLY, next time.

i dont think anyone was having a go a you, flaps. just commenting based on your signature. you didnt really stipulate that if you got a different model golf that you would increase your options to go with it.
I think you're missing the point I'm trying to make. I am able to buy either a GTI or an optioned R and have driven both. Neither of them are THAT special (in the same way that a 135i is) to drive and to be honest not much more special than our Tiguan.
And I have had I suspect many more "sporty" cars than you so I am able to make a judgement call on that .....
SO in the spirit of this thread .... R v GTI .... its R all the way .... or for me R > Tig > GTI ..... don't knock what you don't know until you've tried it ....
And, yes, WJs initial write up is a bit biased, but then so is anybody else here trying to justify a position, including me.

MY99, MY03, MY08, MY09 WRX's. 425hp Skyline R33, VY SS UTE and a 325CI coupe. All new except the Skyline. And now a GOLF R. I have a descent idea. And one thing I have learnt after owning all these cars?
Including an 11 sec Skyline?
A tiguan is not a sports car for gods sake. And does not compare to a GTI. So is a CX-7 (mazda turbo) a sports car? That has grunt. Its 4WD?? I guess it would be in your eyes.. just none of the reading publications I buy would agree with you.
And yes, WJ was being extremely biased. I enjoy reading his reviews as I said, very interesting. But that last one, as someone else said, more about why he thinks the GTI is better than the R as opposed to the reality.
And I have the paper to buy an 135, and I dont see them as in the same league as the R.
My 325CI I bought back in 2002, was $99600 on road (with all the options). I dont see that as a step up in drive to my R thats coming. So I sure as hell wouldnt see a 1 series as being better either. As for the 3 series coupe, It handles great, and its on a 3 series platform. So what? Its still no R. So If you think the hatch BMW is the one for you, go for it. Its definitely a different league, not sure which one though. Maybe the moolah, but thats it. But as I am sure there are many out there, where what you drive is not only what you can afford(+/-).

You could actually FEEL the different in fuel delivery DURING your test drive? Or you were just throwing that in there because you had read that above service article?
And the new R, can actually send up to maximum of ALL THE TORQUE to the rear wheels. More than the STI OR EVO can (60/40 and 85/15, I believe..)

LOL Cant type. yeah definitely try and take it somewhere where you are not stuck in traffic. try and hit a freeway, put the window down a little.. all you can hear is the exhaust burble and whistle.. its beautiful.. And I believe a single chip/flash = 239KW and 435nm of torque!! AWD you should get that down to the ground too.
As I have mentioned before, the one I drove was this good with 200km's oon it.. and you cant compare that to a nicely worn in motor with its first service behind its belt..

I am not sure If we are all crazy, but from my perspective, when one is considering both a GTI and an R and there respective prices, one would be quite normal to assume, that you are pricing them with the same options. "apples and apples"/ "oranges and oranges" so to speak.
You can quite easily price a GTI into the 60K's but I dont hear you complaining about that.
And how can you compare the price of a GTI with xenons and 18's etc with an R and RECARO's ++++. Its absurd to think we wouldnt assume you were transferring more options to the other perspective car.
I believe you my friend are talking "apples and oranges" where the fruit basket seems to be mixed.
If you can get into the 50's, you can afford an R, with 19's.

Actually, it was you who made the sweeping statement with "$20k extra for a car that NO WAY will I get to use the full potential on". You didn't clarify what the options were and for anyone that hadn't read the other thread with pricing, your comment seemed a bit misleading. I already had deduced that you were optioning up the R and not the GTI, but I came in to clarify for all those people who maybe hadn't looked at the other thread that with your SPECIFIC options, the price is less than a third that. Can someone please explain to me how being specific in your statements is all of a sudden a sweeping statement?

Actually I'm LMAO at you my friend .... not only did you display ignorance about what a 135i actually is .... you should spend some time into looking at what cars I have actually had .... including 3 BMW Ms (CIs are hairdresser cars)....... and I never said the Tiguan is a sports car .... it is my wife's AWD hatch that just happens to outperform stock Rs ..... and stock WRXs ..... easily ....
BTW a 135i is a 3.0 twin turbo coupe .... the 130i is a hatch ....
