Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

    • I find it hard to believe that a mile up would drop over 2 secs 0-100. He drove the filmed 0-100 off the line like my granny drives...

      • MK5 GTI to MK6 R

Hi - have many members here made this switch?

I've always salivated over the 8P S3 sportsback, partly because it seems like a reasonable change from the MK5 GTI but they rarely come up on carsales within Melbourne and I've since given up - the R is now looking more appealing seeming they can be found with lower KMs and $10k cheaper.

I'm well versed in the differences between the two, but still fear that despite these differences it will still subconsciously 'feel' like my MK5 GTI.

Keen to hear some experiences from those who made this transition.
        Thanks

Edit - forgot to mention my GTI also has a stage 1 GIAC tune.

        • I made exactly that switch

The R is a far better car in every way

Ignoring the extra power and torque it sounds better, handles better, has better tech (I'm a tech head) and looks better

The one area the GTI is ahead is it felt a little more nimble.

I liked my GTI but love my R. Feels much more planted and has made my daily commute a lot more fun

            • I've made the switch- well almost! LoL! Just waiting for delivery next week on a slightly used one. I dismissed getting an R as it though it'd be too similar to MkV. After driving one extensively, they're very different cars. The extra tech as Candyman mentioned is really something- I had an MY08 GTI with the larger MFD and MP3 RCD radio and I thought that was high-tech! lol My GTI was GIAC'd and it felt more nimble off the line but I think the new-gen 4 Motion really is something else (on my test-drive @ least!).

I love the S3s too but they're still a bit too much coin for their age and newer, more modern Rs can be had for less money.

                    • I see Volkswagen has followed the RenaultSport way and offered two variants of the Golf GTI ... Cup and Non-Cup version. The improvements in weight loss, larger brakes & electro-mechanical LSD makes for a compelling case to upgrade from the MK6 to MK7. Looks like the Power-Pack may necessitate larger 18" wheels to house the larger brake discs. Pedestrian safety re: highline bonnet is doing most contemporary no favours ... better to have a low bonnet-line and charges to lift the bonnet once pedestrian crash sensors are activated imo. Rear of the MK7 look great. It should ride, handle better with greater driver engagement ... although not as comfie or raw as the twins. Imo the Audi A3 appears to be the better looker. Here's a video of the MK7 on the turn-style:

Kudos to JJ-R32 for doing such a sterling job in Paris. Well done.

BTW: I think Ray is going buy the RenaultSport Megane RS265 high-spec model. Can't wait that long for the MK7 Golf.

                      Cheers.

                      • I'm wondering if that lower honeycomb grille isn't some sort of camouflage. In the high rest pics it looks like it's been tacked on.

Yeah, it looks like one of each are tacked in. The only thing R about those photos are the wheels.

                            • I would have thought they would also keep the black R trim on the headlights and mirrors

It is only the 19" wheel current R with black headlight housing (a shame actually, i took a RB with sexy black headlights for a test drive without knowing much about the R apart from 4wd, turbo, and more kilowasps than my WRX, but wanted manual, didn't want the huge tyre & ride cost for 19", when my car was delivered, it had silver housing, who would have known the wheel size dictated the headlight housing lol!).
