  • A quote from Dermot (WA Volkswagen dealer) from earlier in this thread:

24% off is not possible. From time to time a dealer might say "I wont do that deal". That is for economic reasons, they can get more money. But at 24% off, its more likely to be "I cannot do that deal". Buy a Comfortline instead!

If soemone were to put an offer of 24% in front of me, I would most likely ask that person to leave the dealership, and seriously consider having that sales consultant on my staff.

There is time wasing and then there is time wasting.

I think somebody has made a mistake at 24%.
Now, I realise you're not after 24%, but I think that 19% is going to be almost as unlikely.

Lol yeah My heart sinks each time I see a "free stamp duty, ctp & dealer delivery" but smile when I see "*excludes Golf R".

      • I bought 2 Golf R's, was entitled to Corporate Discount and I think my discount is still the highest acheived for Golf R.... I ended up purchasing interstate, shopped around to 8 dealers and did not get 20%.....

With demand up, Dollar up and supply low discounts for a GOlf R are rare!

In regards to your " more options, more discount" this is not true... Each option has more "fat" than others and each option has its own margin.. So just beacuse you waltz in to a dealer and say " I want every option, now give me a 25% discount" thats not how it happens...

True, I think 15% is around the limit. I think a target of 10% is easily achievable and my baseline, anything above without having to be too pushy or playing people off is a bonus

          • I don't think it can be compared from one individual to another.

            e.g.
They may quote you a low price for the car, but also give you an even lower price for the trade-in.
This makes the discount seem larger than it really is. (but also saving you on LCT and stamp duty)
you can't compare this figure to somoene who has purchased the car with cash, and sold their car privately...

I didn't get 10% off, but i did get a price that i'm happy with. (even if others got a better deal)
My only options aresatnav and MDI, maybe there's less room to negotiate.

            Ring around a few places,
You'll see that there are a few prices which are close, and you'll know that's a fair price.
If anyone else comes in under that, then go for it.
Otherwise, pick the dealer that you felt most comfortable with.

Is it worth buying from someone you don't trust to save $1000 on a $60K car?

            • Based on my experience of finding one, from cars which had no options to my car atm with all the good fruit. You'll find that you won't save much percentage wise going for a base car. mainly has to do with stamp duty/LCT and the fact that their is margin in options :p

I was quoted new base car with 5dr/dsg/mdi/bluetooth for 54K approx 9%
then I was given one with a couple of options 5dr/dsg/acc/19's/dynaudio for a little less than 57K, approx 10% off
              and also a 5dr/dsg/acc/sunroof/leather with elecseat/rvc/mdi/bluetooth for 61K, approx 12.5%

I then settled on an order of 3dr/dsg/recaros/acc/roof/rvc/mdi for a little less than 60K. I found compared to the base model offered that i'd be paying an extra 5K for recaros/acc/sunroof which i think is good value over the base model even though it's a 3door. I could justify it cause I would hardly take passengers in the back and the fact that it's not any smaller than the 5door.

All manufacturers offer corporate pricing/packages. I have always worked for a listed corporate and belong to a professional body.

Working for Westfield pulled big discount in the Lexus/BMW quotes. At least 15% with free servicing etc on top of that. Never bought one though because I like remaining under LCT for tax purposes. VW corporate discount was offered via my professional body. Typically its based on the employer... Was surprised this time around.

I no longer work for Westfield because it's just an Uncle Lowy family business and non-family members are treated accordingly. The Lowy's even sit on their own floor with private lift from a private garage to isolate themselves from the 'workers'... Still bewilds me that a top 10 ASX company can be run like a backyard real estate... I never or will ever hold shares in them!

                • That's nice ratedr, but still, 99% is wildly inaccurate.

The salesman asked me what I did for a living before negotiating. He dished up the corporate discount to me.

                    • So do many salesmen. Doesn't mean that 99% of people, or anywhere near that figure, qualify for the corporate discount though...

                      • I think ratedr is saying a figure of speech with regard to the 99% thing. But he is right in saying that it is a cake walk to get and nothing to be proud of achieveing ( I have gotten one of the best discounts on here without corporate anything though). I know people who have gotten corp discounts.. without being corporate.

Corey is being more bout the straight up facts, and the number of 99% he is taking literally. Which is fair enough and makes his point of view correct.

But I dont think you can say 99% is wrong, when you dont know what % is right.

It is very easy to get though, thats for sure. It would be a higher>Lower number.

Whiich is great anyway, dealers give discounts, they sell cars. Everyone wins. Till the whole world finds out on the net and the discount loses it specialness ?? LMAO we did it to ourselves!

Like any of them can be trusted LOL!

As for the wild % figures being thrown around, my next issue is dealer servicing. 99% of them are rubbish because you're paying top dollar to have some retard kid work on your $60k car. I'll be looking into one of the independents, but I'll take that topic over to the other R thread
