I wouldn't say I'm giving GIO the nod. They suited me based on their reputation. AAMI have their place too and I have say their customer service is the best I've seen. You just need to be aware of what is covered in the policy (or exclusions are probably more relevant) and how repairs are carried out (basically the job is awarded to the lowest bidder). They were perfect for my 7 year old Mazda which was only worth $10k.

Also realise that excess can be over $1000 for a GTI and that goes a reasonable way towards repairing panel damage. It's not so much the minor damage that worries me - it's anything between minor and complete write off.

I'll only use insurance with choice of repairer for my car, but agree for something on the cheaper end it probably doesn't matter so much.

That's where Allianz were good for me up until any mod is done - cheap premium, choice of repairer, minimal excess and agreed value about $10k more than anyone else is offering.

I found the same. Maybe it's just a Melbourne thing? Actually I found my wife's Accord Euro was more expensive than the GTI and it only has agreed value of $25k!

I remember Motor magazine used to have a monthly page/column along the lines of 'how much does it really cost' and would feature a car each month with the estimated annual running costs over three years.. and they always used to quote premiums for Mr Average (I think 'he' was a 35 yo with clean record) in Melbourne and Sydney that were about 3 times what I'd expect to pay here in Adelaide. Now I doubt they spent much time researching this, but the point is location does a play a big part in the premium calculation a lot of the time.

I was suprised of some of the prices when i went shopping for insurance,im 28 and have no crash history,i ended up with NRMA and am paying 1200 a year on a golf MK6 GTI.

Thought I'd check it out for myself.. a quote in my current spot vs if I moved to Melbourne (eg St Kilda) or Sydney (eg Wollstonecraft). Melbourne +51% increased in premium; Sydney +54%.

Obviously there are other factors - some likely to be far more important - but interesting to see this all the same.

Well I have a Polo GTI not a Golf but my comprehensive insurance with NRMA was $650/year with premium of $650 too.

Car garaged outside of Sydney Metro area though so that really helped bring the cost down.

22 in a 2012 Golf R, cheapest I could find was $1980 a year with NRMA - 5 year perfect driving record and 65% no claim bonus. Some quotes came in around 10k!

Tried quick quotes with Shannon's and Justcar to get a guide.. Shannon's were hopeless, stupid premium for low agreed value

Seems like I was being unfair with quick-quoting with Shannons - a more detailed on the phone quote sees them still 25% more expensive than RAA on premium; but more freedom with modifications and a higher agreed value.

Plus the dude knew who Viezu was.

I was pretty disappointed with Shannons. I have my bike and MK4 insured with them, as well as my previous car - all in all around 10 years of insurance and zero claims. I'm 33, rating 1, no convictions etc.
Their quote, even after explaining the above over the phone to a very apologetic customer service agent was $1796/month.
By comparison, I ended up with GIO who my home and contents insurance is through who still offer choice of repairer and lifetime guarantee on repairs $1363

Out of interest I tried out Suncorp yesterday - unlike some of the other 'state' based insurers they're happy to cover anywhere in Australia.

Unfortunately their online information is not clear and the call centre aren't keen on providing any information either until you waive the online discount. Their quote was quite competitive and after much prodding they seemed flexible on modifications bar the ones excluded and listed online, but they no longer use a ratings system for drivers and instead use a rewards basis of some kind, but again they weren't keen on sharing the info.

Bottom line is this may be a decent option for some people who are stuck with high quotes regardless of location.. but the secrecy and average attitude of the call centre may put others off.

My final washup (for SA people) - it seems keep the mods on the cheaper end and RAA wins, more expensive mods Shannons comes into the picture. Both offer good coverage, similar benefits and choice of repairer etc.
