You can sacrifice 30 to 50% of what you could potentially get privately by trading in a car. My previous car a dealer offered $13k, but strongly advised to not take the offer. I sold it for $18k privately.Comment

You can try your luck and see how you do negotiating your trade in.. Obviously the dealer will want to make some coin from the car you trade so like what Corey_R said, you will sacrifice some coin if you don't sell private..
The best price I could get for my last car was 30k (got it valued at several VW dealers).. Ended up selling it privately for 38k.. It did take a while to sell however, had some headaches with tyre kickers rocking up to the house to look at the car, making ridiculous offers, wasting my time etc..

Saw the dealer on the weekend to see what they would do for a trade in. They offered $8000. Sold it the same day for $10500
The car is at the Brisbane docks too! They are delaying it a couple of weeks for 2012 compliance so will see it third week of January, two months ahead of the ETA.

I spent nearly 18 months without a golf and last week picked up the brand spanking new Reflex Silver MKVI GTI. Absolutely stoked with it. Can't get the grin off my face.
