Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Just had an awesome conversation with Highway VW regarding my Golf R. Initially thought delivery wasn't going to be until very late in the year (we're talking October-December sometime), just been told it's supposed to land here end of April, with delivery sometime in May!

Best thing I've heard all week! Now this massive lump of yearning can slowly subside...

    • Do you generally bring your bank draft with you as you collect your car, or do you go there, inspect everything to see everything is in working order, then go to the bank and come back to collect the car?

I ask because I added some misc. stuff, so the price will be slighgtly different to the price that I was going to pay for. On top of that, going to see if i can haggle anymore prior to delivery.

      Hmmm...

Is your car already on order/have you signed a contract already? If so, I doubt you'd be able to haggle any more as you've already agreed to a set price, though that's not to say you can't get them to throw in a few more extras like luggage net etc...

In any case, you can always try your luck!

          • Yeah, I don't think they'll budge on price, but I'll ask if they can give me free service for the first 15000km, or a free checkup at 7500km. Something along those lines.

At the moment, I don't think Ill rock in with the pay yet. Probably after checking everything THEN going to the back?

            • It's home now. Just have to learn how the hell all the audio etc works! I know it will play from the iphone - did it at the dealers, but I've mucked something up and it will let me browse the 'folders' on the phone, but not actually give audio - even though it says it's playing. I think tried to set it to bluetooth for audio or something. I'll get it sorted!

FIrst impressions: New car, so everything is tight. Still wants to go though. Love the 'pop' from the exhaust as you play with the flappy paddles. Ride is a little firm on some roads - expected that as it's a sports model. Comfortable for the most part.

Issues: Possibly one but will have to see if it continues. Had a couple of drips of water in some medium rain from the dirvers door. When I got back in the car after dinner, I noticed the seal was a little stuck so I ran a finger through the channel, and all was fine on the way home but not as much rain.

Impression of the Dealer: Would reccoment people see Phil at Gerald Slaven in Canberra. He was a pleasure to deal with. No complaints at all.

You may as well rock up with the bank draft anyway. That'll save you going back to the bank and sorting it out if everything is in order...less time to wait until you can drive your baby!

Yeah, my bad. It's standard on the R, but only available in conjunction with Park Assist on other Golfs.

                        • 24 Hours on.

                          Ok.

24 Hours of GTi ownership away, and 273km on the dial. Loved the car on pickup and the intial hit of ownership is gone. However, the ongoing joy of learning the Idiosyncrasies of the car and the when/where/how it works best for performance/handling/economy is just beginnin.

                          Notes:

                          1. Key fob is great for a 25k base golf. Feels flimsy for a 50k car. Trivial but there you go. The one for the wifes Astra feels nicer to hold and use, and feels far less flimsy. Neither hold a card to the one for the D4 though.

                          2. Why can't anybody get things to work right with an iPhone? If I'm not moving, it will pair the phone and play the music off the phone OK. Start the car and the music keeps playing though the MDI, but there's no sound. You can watch the track slider move, and the time of playing go up... but no sound. Seems fairly standard when trying to use the phone as a BT device and a music player. Time to get a USB stick or break out the iPod.

                          3. Manuals.... after reading the manuals, I did a search here and found the missing buttons to push to do stuff. The 'one manual fits all' approach instead of a manual for each market covering what's sold there is a much better way. Trying to decipher the RDS510 book with it's various versions of the unit... Some have sattelite radio, other digital etc etc etc....

I'm sure more will rear its head so will keep the list updated.

Now something important you all need to know about me:

I'm fussy and pedantic and have VERY high expectations. Still really love the car so don't get the wrong idea from above. They are just MY observations

Oh one thing - had a near miss today with a car not stopping at a stop sign as I was too close to stop (may have tried, but being Canberra, I was being tailgated too). Had that split second choice and hit the accelerator. Damn car kicked from D6 down to D2/3 and spun up to 7000rpm! and took off like a scalded cat. Redline is a 6k so where's the cutout? Sure surprised me that one.

Its just a touch over 7000, bout 7.3k i think. I've hit 7k a few times especially in 2nd gear. I am assuming you have a DSG?

                            • Yep. As I say, it surprised the hell out of me. I, stupidly, looked away from the impending collision (one of the 4 F reactions?) and saw the needle spin around quickly. I should have been looking where I may have had to steer the car, not at the damn instruments.

                              • I agree VW Manuals are mostly useless to navigate through, I have been going through the manual for the wife's tiguan. Was amused by the four dot points on running in and several pages on air bags....

Glad to hear you are enjoying.
