The official I have ordered/received my new MKVI thread
Cheers, I think you have been the one that inspired my colour decision! SOrry, my mistake, it was flappa: "Just warning everyone . . . DONT DO IT , dont buy a Carbon Steel GTI "
Took delivery on Friday. What a car!
I can't get over the performance.
It has been along wait but boy is it worth it. Just can't wipe the grin off of my face.
To all of you who are waiting, be patient. Good things come to those who wait.
Reason that an imported vehicle has to have some local content included once landed at the dock is that government fleets require some options to be fitted locally or some aspect of the vehicle have Australian made parts. This creates local jobs, which in turn aids the local economy. Governments then agree to buy vehicle as part of ther fleet, boosting sales numbers.
Example:
Toyota Hiace van has the stereo installed on the dock of White Bay (Balmain) before leaving the dock. It matters not that the stereo is made in another country; only that a local has fitted the stereo, providing some local input into the manufacture of the vehicle prior to sale. This creates local jobs.
If you look hard enough when driving off the ANZAC Bridge in Sydney, you will see a big warehouse on White Bay (Balmain). This is the mechanics workshop that adds the local content and completes the ADR compliance of the imported vehicle.
Some makes like the EVO IX Lancer could spend up to several weeks waiting for full ADR compliance.
Similar thing with child anchorage points being fitted to the Golf in Aus on the dock prior to full ADR compliance.
America had a similar thing with the MK4 R32. The American version had Monroe dampers, rather than the Bilstein dampers of the European version. This is why the American version didn't handle as well as the Euro MK4 R32. The Aus version also received the Monroe damped MK4 R32 as Monroe has a local factory that supplies GM, Toyota and Misubishi (when they still made vehicles here).
Explains the delay at the dock, rather than customs delay.

Are you serious? They took out the Bilies the car was delivered with and put in Monroe?
There is nothing else for it
Thats just gold!
I'd love to have been at that board meeting.
"we could have someone just stick the badges on"
"No I've got a better idea, lets pull out the top shelf dampers and stick in Commodore ones"
Interesting piece of information WJ... The where-abouts and ins'n'outs of the imported auto business is something I had no idea on...as far as where the vehicles get ADR'd...That is very interesting.
Oh, and I may have missed it....What gets fitted/installed/removed from our VW Golfs....??
BTW, back o/topic...
I pick my GTI up tomorrow arvo........WooHoooo !

If only life was that simple. For Toyota, Honda, Mercedes, BMW and Hyundai to sell vehicles in any great numbers in the USA, those manufacturers had to set up some of their production plants in the USA (most went to South Carolina as Unions are less influential & wage rates are cheaper than up North in Detroit). A different case in Australia ... for Toyota, Ford and GM to build vehicles in Australia, the Gov't has to give them generous grants and an undertaking that the Gov't will purchase these vehicles, hence why 75% of sales of the Falcon and Commodore are to fleets. Hell, the Volkswagen Golf now has more private buyers than the Holden Commodore. Mazda leads the sales chart nationally for highest amount of private purchasers. Point is: Many government, yes even the USA Gov't, are socialist when it comes to creating or protecting jobs. And no, the Bilstein dampers are not removed from the vehicle ... the Monroe dampers are shipped to Europe for installation into the vehicle. In Aus, most manufacturers used Monroe, but Ford has recently gone to Boge-Sachs Monotube Gas as part of Ford's effort to create class leading handling & agility in all their models.
Not exactly sure on how many parts are installed on the Golf when in the dock re ADR compliance; but did read on this forum that another stated that it had something to do with the child anchor points.
