  • Yeah, that's right gtimal, there is still nothing official. So I'm still working towards a budget of "priced identically to the R32". That way, no matter what happens, I'm not going to be disappointed or left without enough to purchase the R. That's also why I've always advised people in these threads of the R32 prices.

... but yeah, if it does turn out to be substantially less than the R32, then I'll have a nice little bonus in my wallet

      • Well, I'm hoping to be able to be able to get into a 3 Door R, with DSG, Recaros, Dynaudio, MDI for under $70k on the road. Any change on that figure will go to power upgrades

I'm coming out of a modified EVO VI now though, so need the extra power lol

          • In case VW is reading this.. lets not talk too much about having '$70k' to play with!

VW - none of us can afford more than $65k for a loaded R thanks.

When I placed my order and prior to that, the word was that official pricing and spec would be released in Feb and the car to follow in May.

              Now info/spec/car is July.

              Bastards!

              • I am sure I read that GTI pricing was only released here 2 weeks before it was available to order.

                • I don't see how anyone dropping deposits off for the golf R will get a discount. If you're thr keen the dealer doesn't have to do anything to sell the car.

Sounds like pricing is still ages away! Doub it will be real cheap otherwise why would you buy a GTI.

Cause $10k is a lot to pay for something that many people don't need. Not everyone wants or needs the additional performance of the R (well, I think that most of us would have trouble convincing the general public we 'need' a 200kw hatchback instead of a 155kw one). But yeah - it's still enough of a jump to make the two models co-exist happily

I'd say if it's R32 pricing, then you'll be able to negotiate under $70k for that config. If it's the '$10k more than GTI pricing' then you'll have enough for an APR Stage II immediately without any negotiation.

You got a 17.5% discount on a GTI? Hmmm
Well, if your negotiation skills are that good and the car were to be priced the same as an R32, then maybe you could. But there is no way that there'd be that much profit to negotiate on if they released it at the GTI + 10k price point.

But you know - it's all just conjecture until VW Australia RELEASE THE PRICING!

yeah that's fair enough, some people dont need the performance of a GTI either and so on, but should make out that a chipped/fully optioned GTI is better.

Comes a point where you have to set a budget.

Anyway July is a long way off, don't know how you guys do it to yourselves the thread will but a few hundered pages long by then!!

                      • Golf R sold out in the U.K. according to AutoCar Weekly

Read in this weeks AutoCar Weekly (12/2/2010):

Entire 350 U.K. allocation of Golf 'R' for 2010 has sold out already.

This is despite the the Golf 'R' costing more than the Audi S3 ($2,000GBP). The United Kingdom Volkswagen dealers are now asking for more 'right-hand drive' stock (maybe from Aus).

Maybe my dealer is right, we may see the Golf 'R' in July in limited numbers only, but no significant numbers of 'R''s until Europe is sufficiently supplied. In other words, probably more like Sept-Nov 2010.

If the U.K. receives an allocation of 350 R's, what will Australia receive (thinking @ 100-150 vehicles).

                        Cheers.

                        • Latest Wheels magazine has a comparison roadtest with the Megane and Focus RS.

Whilst they say all of these are in a different league to their lesser stablemates (ie the GTI), the R did not do too well against the other 2.

I'm thus standing by my decision to testdrive the R before proceeding through to making a purchase.

I've been looking around and a 2003/4 model Porsche Boxster S will probably cost me the same as the R. For my intended use, very little day-to-day and as much track as I can find time for, the Boxster S, would probably be the better bet. If I spend $80K on the Porsche I'd have a really nice car, so its going to be a tough decision come June/July ....

                          • This thread has some discussion information on the latest UK magazine reviews of the Golf R (towards the latter half of the thread). The Golf 'R' is also compared to the Renault Megane Cup and Focus RS for a better gauge on how it performs. The Golf R is still predominantly a FWD biased vehicle, according to the latest magazine reviews. See link above half way down:

Could be true for outright performance and feel but the Golf would probably be the better daily driver and be the better all rounder. The others have fairly agressive styling and Meganes drop in value faster than anything. A few mods/retune would make it more fun if it was too refined anyway IMO.

Good idea, that's what everyone should do, not just assume it will be good.

                              • Porsche as a fun car rather than daily commuter sounds the way to go. Golf R will be too heavy for the track, AWD will take away too much from the driver in terms of skill level ... AWD does make it very easy when pressing on, and more parts to go wrong with the extra diffs in the Golf 'R' as opposed to the basic layout of the Porsche. Heat under the bonnet in this hot climate is also anotehr issue to consider. A fella on the golfmkv.com site has had his Audi S3 5 door DSG on the track and has complained of the DSG overheating and going into limp mode. DSG cooler is not currently an aftermarket option AFAIK. Having done reviews of the R32 and GTI in the past re: suspension kits, I can always smell the Haldex diff fluid after a good run in the R32 ... smells like something burning. No such issue in the simple layout of the GTI; Porsche be the same imo.

                                Cheers.
