  • It's not a bad idea as the point is some people would focus on performance and others want the gizmos/comfort mods. It would be stupid to fully option it up (just as it is anyway).

Yeah - I do agree - I'd love to see a two level GTI, one stripped down a bit and the other with a few more standard inclusions (leather, satnav, mdi, bluetooth, xenons,sunroof,front/rear pdc) - but I can't see VW doing that any time soon

        They do in the USA....

        • Yeah - but Australia has like 20million people... less than a single large city in America - so it's not like they'd bother with us.
They don't in the UK and they don't in Germany and they've got 3 and 4 times more population than us respectively.

LOL which US city were you referring to? NYC is only 8.5 Million.

            • Lol - jesus, everyone wants to knit pick

Seriously, 300million people vs 20 million, I assume you can make your own conclusions about the importance and flexibility of those two different markets

But yeah, I realise NYC only has 8.5 mil.... the NY CSA had 22 mil in 2008

              • I'm waiting for someone to do a back to back comparison of the GTI -v- R. Strenghts and weaknesses etc. Back to back, I like the GTI's greater agility and fuel economy. Never noticed the lag in the GTI until I drove a 118TSI Golf. Golf R has me concerned with the 20% stiffer springs than the GTI. Sure, the heavier weight will take some of the stiffness out of the ride, but the Mark GTI has such a great mix of ride/hanlding compromise for everyday use, esp around town. ACC in 'normal' apparently drops to comfort at low speeds and sport for higher speeds, according to some reviews. Guys stating that GTI should be cheaper with a greater array of options to bump up the price. Same with with the Golf 'R'. I'm not concerned with leather interior, so a Golf R with cloth including lower import taxes should be 2-3K cheaper than the outgoing R32.

                Cheers.

                • This review of the Golf R by yahoo.com cars is very positive.
Says Golf R is faster than Focus RS, Megane Cup and Audi S3.
                  Doesn't recommend stock suspension & 19" wheels; I'd agree - 18" plus ACC.

                  • The Times review of the Golf R. Click Here.
To sum it up, basically buy a GTI if you need five doors and buy a Scirocco R if you want three doors. I reckon that's a load of bull and the advice for the Scirocco is kind of null for us anyway. Haldex and AWD for the win. I'll be keeping my MkIV .:R anyway thanks.
                    Cheers,

                    • CAR magazine has a turn reviewing the Golf R as well...

...If you like your hatches hot, but not at the expense of usability, you’ll love the Golf R. It’s just as you’d imagine it would be, a Golf GTI with the wick turned up, and retains the more basic car’s all-round appeal and manages to be even more desirable...

First time I have seen pics of a RHD..

Looks like this will be the 'standard trim' - with leather as the option.

Will be interesting to see if this is standard, if there is a leather option... and also a Recaro option?

Now we are talking... sweet in Black!

Although it's hard not to say it looks damn fine in white also!

IF VW Australia decided to 'reposition the R cars' and start offering them without leather as standard, you could be 99% guaranteed that they'd also significantly drop the price and still offer the leather and recaro options. Australians just expect leather in a '$60k+ hatchback' (which is what the R32 is on the roads).
