    Just came across this article

    MY07 Polo GTI APR'd - Gone!

  • #2
Australia's leading independent automotive news site. Comprehensive coverage of New Models, Recalls, Technology, Industry Research and Motor Shows.

Sydney Morning Herald team says the Golf R will be detuned for Australia (to 188kw from 199kw).

Theoretically, wouldn't it be better if the car used the full monty tune most as appropriate (at night, cool days, in Tasmania) and reverted to the 'careful' tune on 38deg+ days?

That's certainly a bit less than I was expecting the Golf R to be. Looks like the model will be pretty vanilla in terms of spec, but still that's nice work there by VW Aus.

Reading both articles, I get the feeling that it will be priced under the $57,990 R32 entry price and most likely only a little less at $56,990 at best. Mind you the words in the article used were "it wont be any more expensive" which may mean its the same price. However the first article eludes to a drop. They also state that 19" wheels may be an option. Are these wheels we've seen on all R pics 18's? I would think the wheels we've seen so far are standard. I must say though, I am really disappointed with the July estimation particularly seeing as they claim to have spoken with someone from VW directly. Why would he state July if it were going to be May or June.

I may have to stick with the GTI if this delivery date is accurate. However getting an R on the road with a few options for $65k seems even more likely with this latest info. Bah!

Mid-year has been floated by VW before, so I would have thought any sooner would be unexpected.

Lack of standard leather seats looks like a quick way to bring pricing under the R32 as well.

That is what i was thinking in regards to the decreased price.
We will probably see a de-spec'd .:R20 if it is to come in under the .:R32 price.

It could also be due to the tarif reduction of 5% but i am leaning towards the de-spec'd .:R20 idea.

They probably did that to safeguard the Audi S3 sales instead of the claimed heat issue.

Note they say Leather Sports seats.. not regular seats. I think that is in reference to the Recaro's.

I would still expect Leather and Bi-Xenon to be standard.

I expected them to do this with the power rating. No way they'd cannibalize the S3 and have the R as powerful as the TT-S.

Nothing a quick ecu reprogram can't fix though

Almost all owners would be doing that mod anyway as it is the best bang-for-buck performance mod you can do.

More like they probably did it for the same reasons as Audi given its the same engine. I agree it seems like a load of cobblers, but perhaps there is actually something to it???

Certainly the 188kw & 195kw Audi S3's (pre & post facelift) have different base ECU tuning (and different ECU's with different physical memory limitations) - once tuned, they come out the same. Hardware is identical.

More to do with market placement I believe!

So is the Stage 1 S3 putting out the same as the Stage 1 TT-S Guy? Even though the TT-S 'starts' at 199KW and the S3 188KW?

Don't know as never run two standard cars side by side. Until you do that, it's all just guesswork.

I think the TTS would have more HP as their intake design is a Little cleaner (for the higher RPM power levels)
