Golf R 3 door/5 door speculation/information thread
That won't be any help with me. I'd like to get a fairly well optioned R and I'm prepared to spend $70k+ to get exactly what I'd like. If I were happy to compromise I'd just get a 3 door GTI or a 5 door R.
Yeah, I've never liked the shape that much since the original one, but I think youd get over the interior and styling a bit with a lot extra power and a few mods, pretty cheap in comparison.
Can you even get STI's over here?
Nah - I couldn't get over the interior... and I'd be embarrased to stand beside the exterior

The 05-07 models look better IMO, those and the EVO are still rawer & lighter sportscars, just depends how fussy you get with interior and other stuff (like most euro owners are).

But they are O_L_D.... lol Not to mention rather 2D in their abilities.
Bought a WRX in 1999 and had to wait 3 months for it.
3 months is what it should be and most people could handle, but 6 or 8 months is crazy - you'd lose interest by then and/or a new model would be out! The point is if it's past june you're better off waiting and getting a MY11 IMO, otherwise the values drop a bit before you even get it.
Yeah not sure what i was thinking but an 06-07 STI for 35k would be alright.
My mate has one (06 sti) for sale in that price range. Its pretty spectacular when thrashed (around the adelaide hills for instance). The rest of the time its annoying (transportation stage from sydney to adelaide). It would use fuel at a rate that would make a V8 Commodore blush
cheers for that, will prob give them a miss and can't really get past the golfs or euros yet- great refinement, technology and style although the economy of my R32 wasn't that good.

Agree there, I always wanted an 05-07 STI but didn't have the money at the time and I can't bring myself to buy a secondhand car, especially anything that begs to be thrashed!
But as you mentioned, the interiors and general day to day living with them is unbearable once you've seen what the euros offer.
Plus you have the w@nk attraction factor that they bring. Lots of people have commented that the R is too subtle etc but that is what I love about it. Most people will look and think oh that is just a nicer looking golf which is fine with me!

Off boost they are pretty good but the factory tune at high boost drops AFR's into the high 9's or mid 10's. A simple tune fixes that, bringing it up to a more respectable 11~11.5:1 . A bad tune that I commonly see done by one of the well known companies actually makes the matters worse as they forget to modify the fuel table to take into account the higher airflow&load. Its just sits in the 10's at the hint of boost. The 2.5L subaru motors are very weak compared to the older AGU 1.8' and TFSI's. Audio is crap and the internal plastics are not very advanced
