Not even 'smoked' - they are 'blacked out' - good luck on that. You might want to see if the coating can be removed. They are far darker than the dark R's or cherry Gti's as standard.

hey guys i've got a smoked genuine LED's on my GTI, cop pulled me over saying its illegal. Now my argument is if the part is genuine VW and it provides same amount of breaking light visibility whats the problem??!!!!

Im not surprised you were pulled over - they are very dark. A guy on another forum i frequent purchased the same ones (from BKS) for his Golf R. We all said he would be asking for trouble. As mentioned above, can you remove the coating/film that is on them to get rid of the darkness?

i see, well that sucks. Not gonna bother removing the coat or anything they can have a fat one, seen plenty of cars with blacked tail lights, didnt pay that $$$ for nothing .

I cant say with 100% certainty - but to me the lights on the cabriolet look to be a different shape, mainly where the lights join to the rear 3/4 panel and bumper. The inner lights appear to be the same, but the outer lenses are a slightly different shape if you ask me.

Looking at getting Golf R tail lights for my GTI and came across jku.com.au
They are located in QLD, and supposedly have genuine VW parts from germany.
Does anyone have any experience with them?
I'd like to know before pullin the trigger on getting some lights.

They're certainly more expensive than the German VW dealer that the majority of people in this thread (myself included) have used for genuine LED tails. But of course JKU needs to run a local business etc.

^ spend $100 more and get genuine ones from Bold Sport. I recently got a set from them (cheapest i could find) and they look great and i can confirm they are genuine.

Hi all

I'm very keen to get the R lights for my 118TSI, build date JAN 09.

I noted somewhere in the early pages of this thread that it said LEDs are not supported pre June 09 however i'm just a little confused...

Referring AdamD's post #270 in this thread....

Build date: 2009, prior to week 22
Central Electrics Revision*: 03xx
Headlights: Halogen or Bi-Xenon
- Coding (hex): 4
- Coding (binary): 00000100

Being that mine is Jan 09, i believe it falls in bucket 2...so my question is, has anyone installed the LED tails and coded a Pre June 09 car?(going by above, it looks like it's possible)
Question 2, anyone in Melb willing to complete the coding for me?

I'm also very interested in the R tail lights but am in a similar situation as "VeeDub23" was, where the build date of my GTI is May 09. Some posts have mentioned build dates before June being unsupported, and others saying May.

I'm new to the whole coding side of things and any help would be greatly appreciated.

As per the posts leading on from the one you've quoted above, it all comes down to the version of the CECM in your car, as to whether the LEDs are supported or not. I'd suggest your first task would be locate someone who can scan your car with VCDS and obtain the module version, which will then allow you to determine whether you need to buy a later version module in order to fit the LEDs.

Gents, does anyone know, with the OEM/Hella LED tails, if you get a set for LHD (ie fog on left and reverse on right), how easy is it to convert to RHD (fog on right and reverse on left)?

It looks like they're just standard halogen bulbs, so it should be just a matter of swapping the bulbs over, right?
