Hi guys, just wanted to post a pic of my mod, got my parts today after a month's wait. I took the normal mail option, so it should be faster express mail. I paid $690 after the conversion, which is a bargain I think.
Hi Rob - are those the normal or dark red taillights? Your silver GTI is probably the closest I've seen to a Shark Blue Golf when it comes to having the LED tails, and yours do look good.
Thanks, it does look good yeah and I'm very happy with the results, the LEDs have made a massive improvement to the rear of the car. Every time I walk to my car I stop and stare for a few seconds As far as I'm aware they are the dark red taillights, they have a dark red shade to them. These are the part numbers Ozram gave me, he mentioned that they are for the dark red ones:
5K0945093AG
5k0945094AG
5K0945095Q
5K0945096Q
I noticed from my photos when I downloaded them onto my PC that on some of the photos, the silver of my car appeared a bit more towards the blue you talk about haha. I don't think I managed to get the correct exposure from my camera when I took the photos, with the sun reflecting into the camera as it did.
I'm just waiting for the coding now, but to be honest, after a week or so, I've stopped noticing the warning light.
Anybody knows if installing the LED tails would void the new car warranty?
As long as you fit genuine VW parts, you should be fine.
Worst-case scenario, VW would only be able to void the warranty on any component that failed as a result of fitment of the tail lights, and even then, only if it decides that the parts are a non-compatible fitment.

Even taking into consideration that VAGCOM was used to clear error codes and such? I'm dead keen on the tail lights but so unsure whether I'll lose my warranty

Use of VCDS in of itself isn't going to affect your warranty - unless of course you use it in such a way that causes damage to the vehicle. There's no warranty provided by Ross-tech or any operator against potential damage there, so caveat emptor. Of course if you use it in the manner prescribed by others in this thread, you should be absolutely fine.
The VCDS change is made to tell the central electrics module that LEDs are fitted, and to expect them to draw less current than incandescent bulbs (and therefore not throw errors when they do). In most circumstances you shouldn't need to clear any fault codes - they should clear by themselves after you've made the appropriate change (mine did).
I have a MY2012 GTI and enquired with my dealer whether I could install R LED tail lights. They advised I had to not only buy the lights approx $1200 but also because of the different wiring a control box also costing about $850.
How are people on this thread able to install with just the lights and wiring adapters?
Not sure where on that forums the group buy is, but keep in mind that you need to get specific lights, and not just whatever the Americans are buying...
What differences are there between USA versions and Aus, is it a RHD/LHD thing, or just the fact that we choose the ones that come with a fog light (since the thread says it's ok for Australian buyers).
I'll let someone review the thread and reply. The hardest decision is working out what colour tails would best suit by Shark Blue Golf...

The US has two reverse lights and no rear fog, they also have a different light switch to us.
Australian spec is reverse light on L/H (near / passenger) side and rear fog on the R/H (off / driver's ) side. Anything other than the Australian spec and you are running illegal lights on your car as they don't conform to the Australian Design Rule standard.
Although the genuine part numbers of the lights have changed a few times, I'm yet to see any physical difference between the lights I've had for 18 months or more and the current ones.

Hi All,
This might not be the best thread to start my first post but I just want to thank ozram for his tremendous help in sourcing these RTails from Germany quickly. I placed and paid for the order on 21/10/11 and package arrived on monday 7/11/11. Not bad I'd say. Everything was smooth n easy with installation n coding with vcds was spot on first time!
Again, thank you for the help Ozram and also everyone on this forum for all the knowledge base which couldnt be found elsewhere.
Now if anyone ever needs my assistance in doing this project please feel free to let me know, I'm more than happy to contribute my share.
