    Yes, that is correct.

However, a person cannot operate a vehicle on a public road which does not comply the required vehicle standards.

The act of installing a set of gas-discharge headlamps (or whatever) onto a vehicle is not against the law, but if that vehicle is to be operated on a public road, that vehicle needs to comply the required vehicle standards.

Thanks for the replies and the link. Certainly a very interesting read. Cleared up all the questions I had

Swayed my opinion against looking at the BX's, too much effort and $$$ to install all the required parts. The next car I buy will have this stuff standard

ive done the retrofit on my mk6 and it is much more expensive than i initially thought,
i bought a pair of golf R bixenons from a forum member for $800ish ( i cant remember exact figure) but then had to source the globes ($300), ballasts and connector adapters + loom ($70).
the ballasts were the killer at over $500 for the pair. you also have to change out your BCM ($350) for the high beam shutter to work, the afs and washing systems can be bought for about $500 i have not as yet fitted that up but i bought the relevant parts from carsystems.pl, end result is great as the genuine VW ones are fantastic in terms of light output ( not like the glary result you get from halogen headlights with xenon globes)

overall, its very expensive to do and can be quite time consuming and tbh i probably wouldnt do it again, but if you get all the correct parts (ensure everything is OEM) and do it properly it works out great

            • Hi Everyone,

I have a MY13 July/ August 2012 built Gti, 2 years ago I swapped the stock halogen head lights with Black DRL LED & CCFL Angel Eyes Dual Beam Projector Head Lights from Ebay (pictured), I bought them and installed them myself as they were plug and play and required no coding, I've had no problems with them for the last 2 years except for the fact that they weren't very bright! I installed rear after market LED tail lights too and have had no problems / errors.
(NOt my car just showing the same LED's that I have installed)

So two weeks ago I decided to put in 5800K halogen bulbs in but ended up installing an OSRAM 6000K HID KIT to the aftermarket DRL headlights , the HID kit was from a company based in Clayton South, VIC. That too went without a glitch and there were no errors and everything was working fine.

Today I came home and was leaving for the gym and the car battery was dead, I called Volkswagen assist and got the battery replaced but the front right turning indicator light is just constantly switched on even if the car is switched off! My wife drove the car last night and forgot to tell me that there was indicator error whilst driving (green directional indicator was flashing quicker than normal). I am assuming she didn't notice the headlight indicator light on and that drained the battery. There is a light error on the dashboard too! The lights still work fine though, HID's and LEDS on both front headlights its just the right turn indicator that's constantly on!! I have unplugged the light for the moment. I have read online (Front Driver's Turn Signal Always ON - VW GTI MKVI Forum / VW Golf R Forum / VW Golf MKVI Forum / VW GTI Forum - Golfmk6.com) that people who install HID kits on halogen models have this issue as the CECM is a med to low version (due to it being a halogen light model) and not the highest version required to run HID lights, but my thinking was cause the headlights were plug n play with no coding required this was fine. I do not know what to do? do I need a new CECM or does my current one need to be recoded? Does anyone know where I could take my car in Melbourne to get this fixed?

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

              • Hid error lamp diversion?

Hi guys, I've installed after market xenon hids in my '10 gti.

Being a canbus system it immediately read there was an issue and popped up as an error. Now I didn't mind that at first, but now the hid flickers and most recently (after a week) won't stay on for more than a minute.

I know the normal system runs 35watt and hids run 55watt. If I was to run a relay, would that possibly supply the full power direct from the battery to avoid flicker? Also is there anything that can be done about the error lamp fellas?

Hoping someone can shed some light. Ha, get it? Light? ..yeah.

                • Halogen to Bixenon Upgrade - Issues with CECM? (Central Locking, Taillight, DLR etc.)

I have a VW Golf Mk6 GTI (MY10) which came with halogen headlights.

I'm trying to upgrade to bi-xenons, based on M4rko's guide over on vwgolf.net.au (DIY - OEM Bixenon Headlights, CECM Upgrade and AFS

These are the parts I purchased from www.carsystems.pl:

I'm having the installation done by an auto-electrician shop, and they tell me they're having some issues with the programming - specifically:
                  • Central Locking not working
                  • Rear taillights not working (e.g. brake light permanently on, and other light is dim - http://i.imgur.com/xJqZ8NH.jpg)
                  • DRLs not working

I checked - my keys are 434 Mhz, and the CECM 5K0937087R should also be 434 Mhz.

I do have a Ross-Tech cable, and I took a VCDS Autoscan just before any work was done:

VCDS Log from Golf Mk6 - 2nd June, 2016. GitHub Gist: instantly share code, notes, and snippets.

And this was an VCDS Autoscan I took just now, with the issues present:

VCDS Log during Bi-Xenon Install. GitHub Gist: instantly share code, notes, and snippets.

I didn't have much time with the car in the shop, but I did take a couple of screenshots of some of the bytes for the CECM module - unfortunately it doesn't seem I grabbed the relevant ones - however, I believe you can reverse most of this from the above coding, right? Out of curiosity, is there a converter that can convert the byte strings into checkboxes easily?

But yeah - any thoughts on what's going on? Does the hardware look like the correct one for an AU vehicle?

Also, I did notice that in Byte 0 - transport mode is ticked? Is that a bad thing? (This is a Micro-CAN cable, so I don't believe you can toggle transport mode with it).

to fix your rear taillights, choose 'reset' on Byte 18.

with the central lock, you need to pair the keys with the new CECM, i forgot how exactly but if you google it you should find out some info on ross-tech website.

and make sure the halogen to bixenon adaptors are all wired correctly. i had to rewire some pins.

                    • Interesting - so for Byte 18, I need to choose Reset? Where is that? Is it in the dropdown somewhere? (Don't have access to car right now).

Yup, with the keys - I noticed they left the BCM module in factory mode. I've taken it out of that, and I should be able to pair the keys later using the instructions at VW Golf (5K) Body Control Module - Ross-Tech Wiki

Hmm, yeah, I guess it's possible the wiring is wrong - I spoke to somebody at Ross-Tech, and they saw the scan, and they said check the wiring. Not sure what to check though - I gave the shop the link to DIY - OEM Bixenon Headlights, CECM Upgrade and AFS, so I assume they're just going off that.

Also, for reference, I also uploaded screenshots of all my Long Coding screens for the BCM module:

                        • I've just done a halogen to Golf R style projector headlight swap on my 2010 GTI. Also used a good quality Morimoto 35w Canbus 5500k HID kit. I am very happy with the headlights overall.

My headlights are Eagle Eye brand and look exactly the same as the Golf R silver housings. I am extremely fussy, and have been looking into this upgrade for about 12 months - so i was pleasantly surprised to know that fitment was great, quality also looks great, plugs and wiring were concealed and neat, and the light output is much better than the factory halogens.

I have seen the Vacar branded lights in person and the quality never won me over - plus lots of people have issues with condensation and clear coat peeling. I purchased these through a Sydney based business on Facebook. VCDS Coding & Diagnostics Sydney is the Facebook page to look for if you are interested.
