Sounds just like the long delays they had when the Mk V Golf GTI was first released.

Well - I'm not sure it's them 'making up their stories'. It's like with many things in this world, you can only give an estimate based on the information you have. A VW dealer here in Australia doesn't necessarily know that some government in Europe has put an incentive scheme which pushed VW to the largest carmake in the world all of a sudden for 1 month and therefore the factory was about to get twice the amount of orders that they expected for example (this did happen btw, November VW shot to number 1 due to a Euro incentive scheme).

VW's suppliers might not only supply to VW but to other manufacturers - all of a sudden there is a shortage of a component required... there are lots of issues that can arise.

So as information comes to hand, they'll update and readjust their forecasts.

It's not just the car industry - many industries have this situation happen continually. Whenever you purchase something 'custom to order', you have to realise that there are variables.

It's just like building a house vs purchasing a 'previous completed house'. One you can customise as much as you want, but build time will be subject to numerous things, including the weather, another you can't really change much since it's already finished, but you can move in almost immediately.

If waiting isn't suitable for you - then why are you custom ordering a car? If waiting is suitable, then try not to stress, relax, the wait is going to be a long one, but in the end it'll be worth it.

          • my recommendation is ask them for a VIN number and if not when you can get the VIN number for you car. so then you can track it yourself. and know how it's progressing. my dealer said early march is when i can get my VIN number.

            • Ok an update. Beamm has left VW Sutherland to go work with his Dad @ Nissan (Not Sutherland). Clinton has taken over my deal. We signed the documents on about the 20th December with an estimated March delivery which changed. Build is in the system as the 6th Feb (week 1 not 2 as earlier advised), but he said it doesn't look like its in production yet (or they haven't updated the system). It's due to arrive on our shores 6th May and delivery 14 days later on about the 20th. This is for the GTI of course.

Spoke with Clinton about the R and explained the predicament and also told him i'd discussed this with Beamm. Again, not an issue if I decide to switch but he's trying to tell me there wont be a discount on the R at all. VW Sutherland supposedly have 3 orders @ full retail so far - mmk. I suggested to him that if I switch, the GTI will be here, almost fully loaded and he can resell it most likely for more than I negotiated to (because there wont be a 4-6 month wait!). At that point he was open to the idea that if they make more on the GTI than I negotiated, the R would most likely get a discount.

It'll all come down to whether RRP is released for the R in May as expected which is when my GTI is due to arrive. I'm looking at it like this. If the GTI is given up, a new deal needs to be drawn up and at that point all they will have is my holding deposit for an R. New R contract would be subject to pricing to cover me in the event that no discount will be allowed and its over budget. If that's the case I may be left without a car - but I am sure it wont come to that.

It is most likely due to the Wolfsburg factory shutting down over Christmas.
I was of the belief that it shut down for the last few weeks in december and the first few weeks in January.

Good news about the potential discount on the R though.

My car was built week 51 2009, so im guessing that info is wrong.

I have also heard of week 2 builds.

Id assume that they took the normal holidays, doesnt make sense to shut down a manufacturing plant that cant keep up with demand as it is.....

                        • Well I always knew (even if it was internet speculation) that the first builds were not until Late Jan/Early Feb. With regard to the discount on the R - he was adamant there wouldn't be discounts until I mentioned the possible option to resell my optioned and heavily discounted GTI for more. Therefore opening a window for them where they wouldn't lose out overall. Am going to sit on it for another month before I make the final decision anyway. By then it'll be early March, the GTI will be built and on its way and perhaps more info on the R will be available.

Whilst we may have been told build weeks, it is more than likely to be registering the build with the factory.
Since no one here actually works in the factory we will almost never know (unless a dealer chimes in)

It could also just be a skeleton staff on for those 4 weeks.

There was also the unusually freezing temperatures which could have slowed production.

All i know is that May cannot come soon enough for a lot of VWWC
