  • MK6 GTI cancelled - is a R32 an option?

    Hey guys,

I ordered my Mk6 GTI in Nov, however due to extended delays ( I was told delivery around April today) I have cancelled my order now im back to square one...

    What would you guys prefer?

Mk6 GTI Golf - I had all the options

or a 2007 R32 3 dr DSG with recaro seats..

The R32 I have found is blue and has 20,000klms asking $45K. Not sure what to do here, any one driven a R32? Are they worth it or just wait until end of year and order another GTI??

Mate I just had the same thing happen to me.. I ordered end of Nov.. told march and then yesterday i was told Mid April! :|

I thought about doing the same.. but your not going to get the latest gadgets and improved interior etc..

I would go with the GTI.. but you are probably sving 15k-20k if you get this R32 (thats if you had a fully optioned GTI!

My advice.. go wit the GTI..

Better fuel econ, better shape, better interior, better cabin tech!

The R32 is an abomination among Golfs.

It has 60% greater engine capacity than the Mark V GTI for just 27% more power (and only 20% more than the Mark VI GTI), weighs a lot more and consumes far more fuel around town and yet beats by less than 1 second the GTI's 0-100km/h time.

In urban use the GTI is more nimble than the R32 and any handling challenges it faces are well within its FWD capabilities, let alone what the Mark VI can do with EDL and XDL.

No doubt the R32's resale value will not fare as well as that of the GTI which far better meets the needs of most motorists for efficient, enjoyable and sustainably responsible motoring.

I'd be patient and get a Mark VI GTI (or even more patient and wait for an R20 if you listen to Coreying!) - still the best performance car under $60k.

      Cheers

Well if you are back at square one...

Wait for the new Megane RS250 coupe.

I think a secondhand R32 will start to look very out of date by the end of the year.

Actually, not sure why you cancelled the order... if you re-order you will be up for the same 3-4month wait.

i may seem biased (i'm not btw) but the only REAL test will be the bum test. you have to drive them and see which one you LOVE (not just like).

For me, i fell in love with the sound of the narrow angle 6. Plus i just love the feel of AWD in skittish times. But i will concede the Mk5/6 GTIs are amazing.

it will have to be your call.

Some interesting points you guys raise - I have to agree the MK6 GTI was an impressive drive, but just not prepared to wait another 3mths when later in the year LED lights will be standard, and ive been told remote start engine will be an option next year so perhaps the Mk6 GTI could be a good buy early next year?

Basically I have looked Australia wide for a nice MK5 GTI, cant find what I want. Looked at EVO 10's, now looking at the R32 option just not sure what to do as I dont have a car atm and its giving me the ****s bigtime.

why not a E46 BMW M3 (update model) for around 60-65K privately? Amazing drive in a now-older shape, but still great.
              Or a nice Audi S3?

there are some great deals on the Audi S3 at the moment, Audi are paying all stamp duty etc.

and youre picking up a 2L turbo AWD, with 188 very tunable KW

I think you heard wrong... LED rear lights are an option for the GTI/GTD overseas.

The LED Lights and Keyless Start hasn't been confirmed officially by VWA yet as to its availability in Australia. Whether they will be added as standard equipment to the MY11 plate models or whether they will be available at all as an option is still speculation at this stage.... but I digress !

I agree with getting an S3, though!

Mate the reason your GTI wouldn't have been here till April is because its not being built until the second week of Feb (Week 6+). This is of course if you specified a 2010 plate car and chose a series of options like I did, and I ordered in December. Otherwise, when ordering in Nov you would have most likely got you something 09 plated and on its way already (but without your options).

I'm not so sure you have made the right decision and I think by moving to an R32 (even at a significantly reduced cost) will only further the incorrect decision IMO. If you insist on starting fresh then you will need to look second hand as you have because a new S3 purchase will most likely inherit a similar delay. Perhaps get something second hand which wont depreciate too much and keep it for just 12 months until you can confirm the updated 2011 GTI.

By that time you might be swayed toward the R20.

i've posted this quote before by hans stuck "...I bought an R32. Because I know there will never be a six-cylinder in the golf in the future. It's an 08-model with only 5000km in dark grey. It has to come into the garage and I'm going to keep it..."

if i won the lotto, i would be going out and buying an R32 today...united grey.

agree, it's not much faster than a mkv or mkvi GTI, but you don't get an R32 for that reason.

you get it for the lagless NA power, 4 paw grip, cruiser ride quality and lets not forget the ball tingling sound it makes...

to say it's an "abomination among Golfs" is a little unfair.

Theres plenty of people willing to buy this "abomination".

It has 60% greater engine capacity than the Mark V GTI for just 27% more power (and only 20% more than the Mark VI GTI), weighs a lot more and consumes far more fuel around town and yet beats by less than 1 second the GTI's 0-100km/h time.
And? It's a relaxed NA engine as opposed to a stressed Turbo engine.

In urban use the GTI is more nimble than the R32 and any handling challenges it faces are well within its FWD capabilities, let alone what the Mark VI can do with EDL and XDL.
Do you think the owners really care about that? Nope. If they wanted something fast they would have looked elsewhere and the same applies to GTI owners.

No doubt the R32's resale value will not fare as well as that of the GTI which far better meets the needs of most motorists for efficient, enjoyable and sustainably responsible motoring.
Since when was efficiency and the environment a key consideration for buyers of cars like the R32 and GTI?

The R32 and GTI are different cars and appeal to different people and trolling the forums posting about the R32 being an abomination doesn't make it so.
