Depends what you need. I'd consider the extra 13kw to be worth $1k; cruise to be worth $500; MDI is worth $500 because I like pressing buttons; leather - it does feel nice & adds a touch of class to the car so I'd value that at $200. The wheels wouldn't do it for me, I'd rather buy some 16" of eBay for $400 with tyres

Sounds like that could be an option. Would the car be registered in the originating city or in your state? What about driver's licence? Does the owner need to have one for that state?

If the dealer ships the car to you, and it's not already registered, then you simply take care of registration (including the various approvals/inspections that may be required for QLD) when the car arrives.

I considered (and came quite close to) buying in NSW and driving the car back to SA. The dealers I spoke to would supply a temporary registration slip for about $30 that would get me home; from there I'd need to get the car inspected by the local motor vehicle authority prior to paying for rego.

So then the "drive away" price is a little bogus cos you gotta add in the local fees?

The "Comprehensive Plus" product includes 1 windscreen per year without losing claim discounts (or paying excess), includes hire car, and other benefits. For me the difference between standard and plus coverage was <10%, and yet if I did need a windscreen replaced, they cost about $900 in Australia... and my regular excess would be $600 etc. You do the math
RACQ have something similar - in fact most of the insurance companies did when I last rang around for quotes - but each discount or addition is done separately. The one free windscreen added approx $80 to my Golf's $321 yearly quote which also included hire car and rating 1 for life. RACQ's standard excess is $500. Others like QBE have the replacement windscreen (in fact all windows) as part of the standard policy.

Just an FYI, in Australia, each state has their own registration authority and state taxes. Depending on the state, the "drive away" price can vary depending on the where the purchaser lives within that state, or even the purchasers driving history/age etc. So therefore this "drive away" price should always be taken with a grain of salt, because it can vary per person, and definitely varies from state to state.

If you chose to purchase from another state, you need to let the know that you're out of state, and then things like registration, compulsary insurance, stamp duties etc get taken off the "drive away price". Or in other words, you have the Car's RRP - negotiations + dealer delivery + Luxury Car Tax (if applicable. this is a federal tax and is therefore collected by the dealer).

You then need to know what the "conditions" or "requirements" are for you driving the vehicle back to your own state if that's what you want to do (your dealer should hopefully know... any good one will cause they've done it before), or the dealer can arrange to have it transported.

So don't worry, you won't be paying the "on roads" twice.
The reason dealers show a "Drive away price" is because the Australian government thinks that "typical Australian" is too stupid to understand the difference between the car's RRP and what they'll actually need to pay for a car, so about two years ago they made it law that they have to advertise "drive away prices", despite it being almost impossible in most states to accurate do so.

                      • So with all these differences in place, does it make it more cumbersome if you had to move residences across state lines? Would you need to redo all these registrations when you move?

                        • Isnt the current Golf campaign nationwide? You should be paying 45990 for a basic Adidas nationwide

                          • Yes but stocks seem to be an issue outside of the usual Melbourne and Sydney areas.

If you move state you will need to
                              change your drivers licence
change the rego of your car (will usually need to be inspected by the state road authorities), in the past i have waited until my rego was about to run out for the year and needed to be renewed - that meant i didn't need to try and get a refund in unused registration fees from the state i was leaving
advise your insurance company of your new car registration number

The nationwide campaign means squat when you aren't getting the dealer to pay your onroads for you because you're taking it to another state. They'll of course pay the dealer delivery. But you'd then need to negotiate an agreed "stamp duty/registration/ctp/plates etc" to take off the "drive away price"... it'd depend on how reasonable and logical the dealer (and to some extend customer) are I guess.
