Thanks for the reassurances Corey.
Buying a new car in a new country is always daunting, cos you never know what the little differences are.
So next step: insurance.
The CTP is already included in the price, so do you still buy comprehensive insurance? I always thought it was either or? At least it is in Singapore.
I got quoted (on the account that I am an old fogey with years of driving experience) from RACQ about 53 bucks a month with a 600 bucks excess based on an "agreed" rate of 40k. No way for me to increase the value.
I noticed RACQ gives me a choice of Category 1 - 60% NCD. So that's what I chose.
But really, I have only had my 50% (max here in Singapore) + another 5% for not getting any demerit points on my licence. And I have had that for more than 3 years based on recollection. I guess if there was a 60% here, I would have gotten it by now. Only question is if RACQ would honor that.Last edited by DoggieHowser; 27-05-2011, 10:29 AM.

I would imagine all prices are very sharp right now as dealers still have lots of 2010 build cars floating around. Lots of people (myself included) ordered 2011 cars and as a result, when the last of the 2010 cars came in, they were not sold (or to those who didn't actually know). I doubt such a deal (like those noted above) would be done on a 2011 car - although happy to be proven wrong as those prices were even better than mine for an ordered 2011 car!Current ride: 2014 Range Rover Evoque 5 Door TD4 Pure | 9 Spd Auto | Fuji White | Black Leather | 19 inch 'Dynamic' Wheels

$53 a year seems wrong. I'd expect it to be many times that. Being that you are an "old fogey", it may only be $400 - but no way that it's $53. I'm in Sydney, and not an old fogey yet, but mine is over $1k - and that's with 60% NCD.
As for the agreed value, you should be able to set that to whatever you want (within reason). If you can't do it via the web for some reason, then call them. Make sure that you set the value of the insurance to be the "unnegotated onroad RRP of the car". So whilst you may pay $45k for the car, insure it for $52k or whatever the RRP is. This way if your car is written off or stolen, you'll actually get back what you may have to pay to replace it. That'll hopefully also cover any accessories or mods that you add to it. It also means that it's a more reasonable figure to start depreciating from.
As far as "No Claim Discount", in Australia, the highest is ~60% and is automatically given to drivers without an at fault accident in 3 years. But like, you could have an accident with one insurance company, and they drop you down, and then you switch to another, and they'll put you back up to max as a "welcome benefit" etc. So they're a little flexible here
Oh one more thing. Look at RACQ's "Comprehensive Plus" insurance (I'm with NRMA which is the NSW branch, but I assume QLD has the same thing). The "Comprehensive Plus" product includes 1 windscreen per year without losing claim discounts (or paying excess), includes hire car, and other benefits. For me the difference between standard and plus coverage was <10%, and yet if I did need a windscreen replaced, they cost about $900 in Australia... and my regular excess would be $600 etc. You do the math

My bad, it was late at night
It was $53 per month. I did see options for the windscreen cover as well.
I have had the coverage for the last 10 or so years but I have only had to use it once. Not sure what Australia is like but I did remember hearing about hail stones from a friend in QLD.
So maybe that's worth checking out.
Thanks.
ps dealer is pressurizing me to make the deal on the Adidas.I can understand why. Looks like there's another guy who'll take it if I don't confirm it. Even with the deposit.

Maybe every 5 years we get a big one come through that does damage to cars, but then its somewhat isolated.

If you want, PM who you are dealing with and I will have a look around if I get time on the weekend.
There has been an Adidas GTI at every dealer I have been to over the past 2 months, and they either didn't want to sell them (showroom stock) or they just weren't moving as quick as everything else.
I would say Adidas isn't as big of a name up here in QLD as it is down in say Sydney or Melbourne where soccer is bigger and certain people think wearing an Adidas track suit in a social setting is normal.MY11.5 Golf 118TSI DSG - United Grey, Sports pack (cloth), Bluetooth, MDI

Paying an agreed value right now is only really useful if you hate the car and if for some reason it is written off you want the cash and not a replacement car or you bought a pirelli/35/Adidas and you really really loved it to death and cannot see yourself driving a GTI or R.
This thread isn't really the place for this topic though - there are numerous insurance threads in general etc. I only replied to Doggie here as it was part of another post, and then to this, because your advice is bad based on it overlooks the clauses of new for old. :/
Doggie. Hailstones are one factor, but usually it's just stones being kicked up from the cars in front. We've got a lot of relatively bad roads in Australia. I guess it's kinda like a lottery though. The difference in cost on my policy means that even if I do only have to replace the windscreen once in 10 years, it's currently about the same to take the better policy... plus I then have a hirecar and those other benefits if I'm in an accident - so it's a no brainer for me. Not everyone's situation is the same though - and costs do vary from person to person

Tornado Red (ironically same color as my in-law's MkV GTI) MY11 Adidas which supposedly comes with the following which are options on the basic GTI:

Therefore it should cost no more than 45990 to drive away + any options you specify in top of that.
I would suggest you go back at say 46K drive away WITH the parking sensors.

Maybe the competition is fiercer in NSW so they are much more willing to discount there.
In any case, no harm asking if he can throw it in

Just a quick question: does 90TSI really worth extra $2500-3000 compare to 77TSI? Seems like all you get is Cruise Control, Alloy wheels and leather gear knob (whoopy!) - does all this really cost that much extra money? You don't even get RNS510 included in 90TSI standard edition.MY18 TIGUAN 162TSI Sportline | DarkNight Tint

There are lots and lots of differences between the 77TSI and the 90TSI. Firstly, the 77TSI has basically no options - it's very "cut down and rigid".
90TSI Options which are not available on 77TSI:
Alarm System with interior monitoring and tilt sensor
Park Assist, including front/rear Optical Parking System.
Bluetooth
Media Device Interface (MDI)
Electric glass sunroof
Please note that even many of the dealer accessories are either NOT AVAILABLE for installation, or work with reduced functionality with the 77TSI due to it's basic steering wheel and MFD and computer.
90TSI Standard features above the 77TSI:
Alloy wheels (Wellington) 15 x 6½” with 195/65R15 tyres
Anti-theft wheel bolts
Cruise control
Gearshift knob in leather
3 spoke leather rimmed steering wheel
Audio and Multi-Function Display controls
Multi-Function Display (MFD Plus)
1.4TSI Engine with 90kw/200Nm/9.5sec 0 to 100/6.4 or 6.2L/100km (improvements of 13kw/25Nm,1 second, for a decrease of 0.3L/100km in the manual or identical consumption in the DSG).
So the $3000 difference really comes in some of the things which you use all the time - engine, steering wheels, controls, instrumentation, and additionally, access to options which are not available on the 77TSI.
Is it worth it? That's up to you.
