I'm curious to hear opinions on the relative merits of getting a new GTI now or in August. There are driveaway deals on at present which offer savings on CTP, Dealer delivery etc, but I'm not familiar enough with the new car market to estimate whether those savings will be greater than another 2 months of release/new financial year pricing.
I ask as I'm headed overseas for 5-6 weeks from July so if I did get a car it'd be sitting unused for a couple of months so it may make more sense to wait until August.
Would someone more familiar with the vagaries of new car pricing care to weigh in?
The ramp up is to clear stock and get the figures up before EOFY.. I am guessing you may get some residual of old stock in August but maybe not the on roads.. If it were me I would start hunting around now getting quotes and getting the sales folk excited.. then do a deal on the Friday before the end of year..

^ this. Particularly as some dealers are combining corporate discount AND free on roads, a big saving
From my experience, you're better off taking advantage of the sales. I started looking just after the June sales last year and couldn't come close to the prices people negotiated during the sales. Dealers won't give up their ORC easily unless someone else is taking that pain from them so you're on a much better footing. Furthermore, they know every other dealer is offering at least the same deal so there's more competition.
They did the sale again in October last year and once again the pricing was sharp.
One thing I would say is don't leave it too late. This is to clear out existing inventory. I started looking again in the last week of the October sales and by then all of the base models (ie. 5 dr, DSG, no options) had been snapped up (unless you wanted Red) and there was only the scraps left. Usually dealers know whether they've made their target by that point so the eagerness just wasn't there.
If you're keen. I'd be hitting the dealerships right about now with a cheque book and your 'serious face'
This is with corporate discount. MY12.5 and new! Looks like I'm joining the gti club soon. =)
Are the types going to set me back a lot from 17" to 18"? I'm unsure whether I should pay 1.2k for the 18s....

Try for 42k with the 18's.
Otherwise, if you're happy with the 17's, it's a decent deal. In October last year I was pretty confident of getting 41.5 - 42k for the same deal without the ipod cable. They didn't have the colour I wanted so I offered 40k and never heard from them

That car doesn't have satnav fitted; just the standard RCD-510.
I have been offered a Golf GTI in white DSG with 17" wheels for $39700 driveaway (must be delivered by end of Monday the 31st) with the purchase of a CC 125TDI, white with sunroof (which is priced at $56000). No corporate discount.
