But isn't that the point? If I wanted everyone else to 'notice' my super-hot-car, then I'd get a canary yellow Nissan GTS-T with three 20" Subs bouncing the windows off their seals....

    • Umm yeah thats what I said I liked if you read my earlier post, was just pointing out why some people think its too plain, fact is that as I said the GTI with its red highlights is more recognisable.

Problem with being too non-descript is that you have to explain to people what you drive, and that only people who know cars will nod in appreciation, isnt that what Clarkson says?

Anyway I like it, and if you buy one thats all that matters

      • Hi all ,all the best on Australia day hope it was a good one plenty of food drink an a nanny nap .

Just done a quick survey at work 2 out of 6 pick the difference between the
        GTi & R .
To be honest I'm a bit disappointed how the R looks ,even the inside looks to much like the GTi .
Whats the damage for the R .

        Cheers

        • No official listing of prices but based on the GTI and talk here it sounds like it will be similar to the R32, around mid to high $50s plus on roads etc, there are some details around here somewhere

Well either they're blind, or all your survey points out is that they don't know what a GTI or an R is.
I mean, there are obvious differences... so what happens if you do a MKV GTI vs R32? They'res not much difference there either!

it must be the 12 hour nightshifts .

Like others have said if you don't really know the car you might only pick the wheels or the lower air dam.

I like Vdubs but it doesn't have to mean I agree with everything they do

                • It's interesting that on the VW UK site, they do list towing capacities for the Golf R. I'm also interested to know how you attach a tow bar to a car who's exhausts appear to be in the way!

Back to the 'spot the differences' thing. I've found most people can't even tell the difference between a BMW 3, 5 and 7 series. I mean, unless you either into cars, or an observant person (becoming a rarity I tell ya!) people just don't notice these things. But in the end, who cares about other people, it's what you like! I for one am glad that the Golf GTI and R are not 'hey look at me' cars.

They are both similar and still Golfs after all.

Even the MK4 and MK5 model variants are all similar as they are still Golfs and the average Joe on the street may not see much of a difference unless they know the models etc. It's not something instantly recognisable (like other sports cars). That's where the Scirocco would stand out.

Doesn't worry me as it's fairly stealthy and never get hassled by the police like WRX/Nissan drivers do.

It also shows that the GTI is possibly better value for money since the Golf R doesn't look much different/better, however the whole range is nice and people will recognise them as Dubs. I don't really want a look at me car either..

                    • So, if anything the Golf R has served a purpose by making the previously invisible GTI more noticeable compared to the rest of the Mk6 range.

Very true. Half my mates don't know anything about cars. They'll just stare at me and my mates who are into cars when we talk about particular models and point something out that's driving past etc. They just don't get that we can see a car driving past and pick the exact model of it and know a bunch of stats about it.

My sister laughs at my Dad and I talking about cars, cause all she hears are random letters and numbers. It means nothing to her and a lot of other people.

Basically if someone can't tell the difference, then they're not in to cars and probably wouldn't care that you're driving an R anyway.

And like others have said, people should just buy what they want. If I had bought what the supposed 'it cars' were in the past, then I would have missed out some great cars that I've had

And you know what I actually like that about the R
As mentioned it does have a few other details to set it apart but it is rather subtle and that is what I like about it.

I can see why people like the Scirocco as it is rather unique but its a bit too fancy for me. Even if it came in an AWD model, I'd keep my R order. But they should bring it out to give people that choice.

LOL I always thought the GTI stood out in the Mk5, still does in the MK6 i guess.

thats the whole point... if people are buying an R to show off to other people, well they're probably buying it for the wrong reasons.. otherwise get a fully sik skyline or rex with 20" polished rims maaate.

the S3 is the same in that regard, only it looks more like a grandmas car, so it probably goes a little too far in that "subtle, but quick" direction.

i love all there is to the R from what we've seen/read... now to just drive one of the bastards...
