  • It's not really that odd.

They're basically saying the Golf R is the best car, it's just that since it's more luxurious and has AWD, it isn't as "exciting" as the other two. The R32 was the same... but even lazier than the R

    • Either way I wouldn't be ordering a Golf R or highly spec'd GTI as there is a good chance the Scirocco R will make it out here, which looks a lot hotter and more unique considering the new Golf is aimed at high production with a more generic look.

Those other cars may be more fun to drive but depends if you like the sure-footed feel o awd. The R32 isn't lazy just the power delivery is different.

      • You do realise that the Scirocco R is only FWD drive?

Sure the Scirocco looks nice and all, but it's too small for my requirements (3 door is not the issue), plus the fact that it's FWD only, I may as well get a GTI and do it up.

        I'll stick to the R

        • Yes I know it's FWD.. Depends what you want and if you'll use awd to it's potential on the streets. It's about having something unique.

          • Yeah, the back seat and boot of the Scirocco are both so small that I could never consider it. The roof level is way too low for even myself to sit comfortably in the back, let alone my friends who are mostly taller than me.

            • Agree it's a shame that the Sirocco R isn't AWD.. Seems the XDS helps most of the issues the mk5's had with FWD.

Headroom would be an issue too, unless the seats are sunken down like the 1 series (which actually have a bit of room as long as you're not too tall).

              • I haven't sat in the back of the 135i coupe, but the issue with the back of the 130i hatch is not headroom but rear leg room - it's not very good at all

Wow, your friends must be tall. I sit comfortably in the back of ours, I am 6 foot 1, and the leg room is more than sufficient as the seats are long. It is deceptively roomy, people are continuously surprised how comfortable the back is. The boot is far from small as well, close to the size of a Golf's.

                  • You have a Scirocco? No fair, how'd you do that in Australia?

Anyway, the Scirocco headroom according to VW is 5.5cm less in the rear than the Golf (only 3cm in the front). Maybe you slouch or something
Plus there's only 2 seats and the passengers are close together (there is no 'centre console' in the rear)

The boot, with seats up, is also 40L smaller. With seats down its 300L smaller.
So anyway - that's pretty significant differences to me, which is why I couldn't consider one.

Wow, done some research to back up your baseless assumptions . The Golf is a tall car, most people would still be have plenty of room with 5cm less headroom in the back. In terms of usable boot space, there is not much in it but of course the Scirocco is going to have less with the seats folded down.

Really shouldn't be judging a car unless you have experienced it, I'm sure your Golf R will be a good car, but it will lack some of what makes the Scirocco so special. I know that it is all a personal thing, but after driving the Golf R a couple of weeks back I was glad to get back into our 2.0T Roc. Even if they were priced the same I would still take the Scirocco despite the performance and grip losses. Can't wait for the Scirocco R now.
