Congratulations on your purchase, and have fun.... what colour?

I am new here so I hope I am posting my query in the right section. I just recently bought a 2009 golf 103 TDI comfortline DSG with sports pack. Delivery is expected to take place this coming Thursday. I have tracked the car via its VIN and it indicated that the car was delivered from Port Kembla in March 2009.

As I found the whole experience of dealing with car sales people quite daunting, I would be grateful if more experienced members could clarify some of the issues that I am concerned prior to taking delivery:

      1. Given the car has been in the car yard/warehouse since March 2009 is there a higher risk of dammage to the body (scratch, etc) to be expected? What are the hidden signs I should be looking out for?

      2. What sort of "pre" mileage on the odometer is acceptable?

      3. What acceptable brand of tyres should the car come with?

      4. The dealer will not give me a cheque for my trade-in on the delivery date. How do I make sure that the refund will be made as they say within 1 week?

Any general tips/help that you may have is most appreciated.

      Thanks for all your help.
      1. This is way to long for a car to be sitting around especially in a product like Volkswagen that is in high demand. If you can try and change colour options to get something closer to Dec build as you can and 2010 complinanced so it can be registered as a 2010 car. It also suggests that the build of this car might have been late 2008, you really don't want a car that is already 2 years old before you start. This is obviously a lesson to all that the cheapest is not always the best.

      2. This varies wildly as some cars are take of production line for quality control to be driven, driven at wharfs/holding yards and then dealers do between 5-10km during pre-delivery so in reality it should be between 20-50km, as stated anything over this you need to question.

      3. VW use 6 different tyre manufacturers from memory they are Bridgestone, Continental, Dunlop, Pirelli, Michelin and Good year. The sports pack (if you are referring to the factory option) is done at the factory so the dealer is not in control of what tyre's are put on. If they are telling you they are putting a sports pack on locally then this is starting to sound more dodgy and again a lesson that cheapest is not always the best.

      4. You have to pay on delivery of your new car and they have to pay on delivery of yours. If you present a vehicle in the condition they valued ti then there is no reason why they can't have a cheque drawn and ready to hand over on delivery. Without it you open yourself up to them saying they wil pay you less because they inspected after you left and the condition has changed and its worth less. They sound dodgy enough as it is, be smart and dot your i's cross you t's. You have more legal rights than they do and you should exercise them.

      Good luck

      • Delivery kilometers vary greatly. Most have around 10-15klms on them when they arrive at the dealership. Factor in a trip to the petrol station, maybe a few trips to various other places for accessories (such as fitting and painting of spoilers, tint, etc). Some stock cars (ones that the dealer has purchased to put on the lot), will often be test-driven by potential customers.

Lacoste, if your car is an early '09 build, the chances are it is has been a stock car, and that it may have a few extra klms on it. However, no more than 100.

As for compliance dates, etc. it's such a pointless, hair-splitting issue. We had one customer pull out of a deal only hours before taking delivery of her car, becuase it was December '09 complied, late October '09 build. Even though it was a 2010 model, and nothing has physically changed on that particular model VW in the last 6 months or so, she still complained. Solution? Order an early Novemebr '09 build, with early January compliance.

        • It seemed strange to me that this car was a March 09 build, but still around and being sold as new.....
I'm with 'skoda convert'.... sounds a little dodgy.

          • Sounds a bit strange, are you getting a good discount due to its age??
If you go through with the purchase check to see if it has a maintenance card for the battery.
Hate to think its been sitting around that long and somebody starting it every few days and
runs it at idle to keep the battery charged.

            • Nonesense.

It's not dodgey if the dealer discloses to the buyer that they are in fact buying an older model. Besides, there's still plenty of new Golf 5s sitting in dealerships unsold. That's not dodgey, is it?

My landlady bought a new '07 build Jetta about 8 months ago. She doesn't care. She loves the car.

              • There is a heap of old stock out there, ive seen 4motion passats with 07 build recently getting registered for the first time and put on as loan cars. Also heaps of Jettas around too the same. It is a bit more uncommon for the golf's to be that old.

Any of the R32's i have seen going out lately have been an 08 build.

                • Thanks for all your replies. To answer some of your questions, I am told that the car was manufactured in Jan 09 and the sports package is from the manufacturer not local.

Nicandlance and Flipperdog - apologies for the confusion about the cheque for trade-in situation, but I am getting a novated lease for the purchase. Both the dealer and the leasing company insist that the lease must be written on the gross purchase amount and not the net (changeover) amount. Is this correct?

With payment the dealer is requesting cleared funds (that is money in their account before the car is delivered). Is this standard practice?

Umai Naa what does a stock car mean? I am told the car has remained in the car yard with its protective cover, etc.

In the end what would you suggest I do given the situation? If I pull out now I will be liable for 5% of the transaction amount. Personally, I am not too fussed about the Jan 2009 manufactured date, but the issue for me is whether the 15% discount that was negotiated compensates for the 2009 manufacturing date. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

                  • This all sounds reasonable to me; the dealer disclosed the car was a Jan 09 build (March landed in Australia makes that possible), so I wouldnt worry about that, you knew the cars age going in

Regarding Novated lease, the dealer is correct, you cant have any ownership in the car (thats a tax ruling), so the finance company must purchase the car from the dealer and then lease it back to you; thats all very standard practice

Its normal the dealer either gives you a cheque OR does a direct deposit a few days after you have handed the car in; if your doing this through a genuine VW dealership, I wouldnt worry about it, ive done the same thing a couple of times and the money always shows up; Id offer up the dealer is more honest than many simply by disclosing the Jan 09 build date upfront...

Your buying the car new I assume; the warranty starts the day you drive out of the showroom, regardless of when the car was built, you will be fine

If you got 15% discount, thats a reasonable price reduction; if you want my advice dont get too caught up with the discounts posted on internet forums, take them (and anything else posted on the internet) at face value......

                    • Hi Lacoste,
                      That is clearer now.
Yes with a novated lease you finance the whole amount the car is worth, so any money which may come your way from a trade or what ever is yours and has no effect on the new cars price.

Cleared funds is normal but your lease company should have this arranged prior to you taking delivery of the car, you need to ensure that your finance people are on to this.
What normally happens is once you are happy with the condition of the car and ready to sign for it the dealer contacts the lease company and funds are credited to the their account, there may be a few minutes in delay but by the time you have been shown over how the car works you should be okay.

A stock car is a vehicle which was ordered as dealer stock and has not yet sold. These are normally held in the holding yards and not offered up to view in the showrooms or front yard. They are normally common colour/makes which a few are waiting around. It is not uncommon for cars to be up to a year old which have not sold. If you have a look across the road to Ford or Holden you will see heaps of the same. What normally happens is around the start of the new year the dealers sell these off with a reduction in price to clear room for newer models. Some times this is dealer only offered or backed by the manufacturer. You sometimes have the on road costs covered or some added on dealer fitted parts included, all to dress up the car and move it on.

Stock cars are normally kept under shade cloth or hard cover (warehouse) so are not exposed too much. Once washed and a quick detail you will be none the wiser. Remember part of the dealer delivery procedures is to service the car and have it as new for you, so if it needs a new battery or oils replaced than this is what happens.

Your discount of 15% for a car that is now 12 months old is not fantastic, this is still good value but there would be room to reduce that if you worked harder. Not knowing your situation or lease company you have gone through, but most offer a service to find you a car for you, via a broker. There is great saving there as they are in a position to gain a better price than any of us sole shoppers out here. Maybe a point to know next time.

In the end if you are happy with you have got, that it is available now for delivery, your trade was reasonable and the lease works in your favour then you have done well.

                      • Brokers get a better price?????

I have always been amazed at brokers who come into forums pretending to be genuine forum users. They try and paint this picture that a broker would get a better price than you could because 1. He is a really nice guy and would do it for free and 2. They have the ability to get discounts the average Joe couldn't. Both are wrong wrong wrong

brokers make minimum $500 off the dealer per vehicle sold off the dealer and it is added onto the cost of the car. How else do they get payed?? Some I'd then will spin the line that they get their money by doing you finance so the Broking is free, reality is they get payed on both. As for their special relationship with dealers, this equates to an email or fax to 2 or 3 demanding best price. Nothing you couldn't do yourself

                        Sorry to get off topic

the rest of the advice although coming from what would appear to be a broker seems to gave some strong dealership knowledge behind it (maybe ex salesman) and is sound

                        • Lacoste, just to clarify, a stock car is a car that is ordered in for stock. Ie, it does not yet have an owner. Some are held in warehouses, others in holding yards, some spend time in the showroom, and others out on the front lot. If you're getting a good discount on buying last year's model, then yeah, take it.

Anyone bought a manual 3dr with no options. Got quoted $38900 with corp discount. Anyone have a better deal?

                            • That sounds about right... When I got a quote for a 5dr with Detroits and corporate discount, it was about $2500 more, so seems reasonable...
It works out to be ~12% of RRP, which is what most GTI buyers are receiving..
