Thanks I guess was looking for economy out of the box, but now I understand it will take a few thousand k's before I really start to see improvement....

It will improve all the way to 15,000-20,000km. You shouldn't be trying for economy when running inOriginally posted by Rendog View PostI've got the manual 77TSI and have just completed my first tank of fuel @ 6.4L/100km with about 80% highway driving ave speed about 100-110kph with no slow downs. The VW Golf brochure rates it at 6.1L combined driving, I was thought I might get just under 6L.
Should I expect fuel consumption to improve as the engine loosens up? Or where VW testing extra urban at 80kmph in 6th gear

4.2L/100km on a recent trip down south.
Also got a good 5.1L/100km doing suburban driving on a trip to borrow a vag-com cable

Yep, it will improve with time.
I can also take time for you to "learn" the car and how to drive it efficiently etc.

I used up approx 3/4 tank for my recent 550kms trip to the Great Ocean Rd.
I was bloody impressed with the consumption of this pocket rocket! MFD showed 8.7L/100km.

Average is now sitting at 9.6 l/100km
On the pacific highway/F3 coming back from Coffs today it averaged a rather wallet pleasing 8.1m including a damn good blast along the wootton way, north of Buhladelah.

He's driving a Golf R Mariani. It's got a different engine, more power and torque, AWD, and an extra ~125Kg on the GTI you have on order...

Far out that's a lot. So how KM's are you getting on 1 tank of fuel?Originally posted by Tom_R View PostIm averaging about 12.5l/100 in peak hour traffic and about 8.5l/100 at night with minimal traffic.
Must admit, my current Cooper s is the best on fuel. Am happy the GTI is only a small increase.

A cruise to/from Sydney today, with the run TO sydney registering 7.1l/100km on the TC, 7.3l/100km on the way home, overall 7.2l/100km. Reasonable, but not that good as I was expecting much better. I've been getting 7.4 - 7.7 around Canberra regularly.
For the performance of the car it's excellent, but with every other car I've owned, I've been able to match, or better, the highway consumption on the Canberra/Sydney/return.
Oh well.
