I've tested this! Got approx 330km on half full and approx the same on half empty so the myth is busted

My new (1400 km) GTD returned 4.8 l/100 km yesterday on a 140 km trip, the first 30 km of which was city driving. The balance was 100 - 110 kph. I used 4th, 5th and 6th gears just to vary the revs whilst I'm still running it in.

Car has only had 98 in it since new (11848km since 23 March), and is still going strong.
Oddly, mine tends to do the opposite - more kms on Ultimate and smoother on Vortex. Not too significant km difference, though.

I try to only put BP Ultimate. On the odd ocassion I've had to put in Caltex Vortex and I notice my car does not run as smooth as with the Ultimate... Haven't tried Shell VPower yet.

    For GTI's and R's, 98
You could run less if you were a cheapskate...

Just wondering, which fuel type (E10, 91, 95 or 9 people use in their Golfs? Especially GTI's?

In my present car (not a Golf), i use E10 and that gives me on highway around 20kms/lit.

    Cheers,

Filled up yesterday as the needle was on the empty, and the 'distance to empty' hit zero when I started the car at home - funny, it had been reading 20km when I parked.

5km to the service station and 52l put in for 815.3km

According to the paperwork from the lease company, I have managed to acheive 7.45l/100km over 10444km. Pretty damn good for a car with the performance of the GTi.

One thing that is noticable is the 400 - 500km on the first half tank by the guage, then the 200 - 300 on the last half tank. As others are reporting similar observations, I guess it's just a 'feature' of the Golf.

Economy don't get worse, you just start noticing the fuel gauge more often as it nears the empty side of the tank.. I know I don't really pay attention to it till its about half way!

I tend to refuel every week on the cheapest day which is a Wednesday (Shell) for me and have occasionally achieved 400kms per half a tank recently or just over half a tank on my mk6 gti. I usually drive in a very conservative manner, however when it comes to stop/start traffic or down town driving, fuel efficiency slides quite dramatically.
I will have to make more observations but it feels like fuel efficiency drops when it has less then a half a tank of fuel.
I also anticipate that the hot summer days will make matters worse since the air-con is pumped up at the max most of
    time.
