  • That's a bit of a simplistic view of things. Also during the last 4 years, the Aussie $ has sucked. VGA just rode that out as well - as did many other manufacturers....

Another way to look at it is to compare the base Golf with the base Toyota Corolla. There's only $3250 diff between those cars. Look at both side by side, get in them and really look at what is included, the quality of materials, and then try and tell me with an honest straight face, that Volkswagen are the ones that need to look at their prices! The Golf is a bargain in comparison

    • Greetings

Currently looking at the Golf R and reading through this to see what to expect of a good quote

      • Is this a 5 door that you're talking about? If you're also only asking for standard black on white plates, then that'd be about a 8.44% discount...

        • yes apologies it is a 5 door..

is that a good discount for a Golf R

I wasn't trying to over-simplify the argument. Only briefly in 2008 did the $OZ drop significantly below the level at which the first GTIs were imported. At the worst this would have meant belt-tightening and little room for negotiation with dealers. VW Australia's original business case would have included some hedging on the exchange rate so the impact would have been relatively immaterial. What is not in dispute is that the $OZ is close to an all time high against the Euro. VW are currently enjoying a huge margin on their landed cost and therefore it's a very good time to drive a hard bargain. In short, it's a buyer's market.

I completely agree the Corolla is over-priced. Only when grey imports are allowed into this country without restriction will we see our main dealer prices better reflect those of other developed nations. Alas that would see Ford and GMH, our government subsidised American companies, completely collapse so it's not going to happen.

And if VW actually owned the dealers, then maybe you'd be right. But they don't. The dealers are owned by franchises. Volkswagen Group Australia purchase from the factory (and it's VGA who may or may not be making a killing right now, depending on what deal they managed to negotiate), and the dealers purchase from VGA. Since the transaction between the dealers and VGA occurs in AUD, the exchange rate probably means squat.

              • Good point. Still I imagine franchised dealers would be pushing back on VGA. it's not like car dealers to be shy when it comes to negotiation.

I was pleasantly surprised with the R pricing. VW run closer to home market prices than many of their rivals.

                • The price of the dollar has no impact on the negotiating process with the dealer. The price is secured between VGA and the factory and between the dealer and VGA and then locked in for 12 months, regardless of fluctuations’ on the currency market. I believe this discussion has been had on various threads on this forum, and it is a narrow minded and simplistic view to think that just because the dollar changes one week that you can go into a dealer and demand a higher discount.

Markets go up, markets go down, and the price of the GTI has remained unchanged. Volkswagen & VGA have done a super job of keeping the price of their cars stable throughout tough economic times in an effort to secure a level playing field for all buyers.

If the AU$ somehow collapsed next week, would you be the first to push VGA to hike the price of their cars & spare parts? I didn’t think so.....

                  • Yep, all those points are exactly right Dermot. And it has been discussed in other threads in the past, so I think we can bed this issue and get back to the topic of the thread now
