I love those kind of websites where people try to go out of their way not to get an ipod, even if it's not as good. Most people doing the bashing don't or have never owned one.

If people can't negotiate to get a cable thrown in they should just cough up the $70 (it will be the cheapest part of buying a new car).

I prefer to use the SD Card feature instead of MDI - SD Card is a lot better because you can leave it in the car without worrying about thieves, and you can manage the music on any computer you like without having to use any other programs. That way I can leave my iPod alone without modifying it for any sort of playlists I prefer in the car and whatnot. Oh, and I can have two separate folders - one for my music, one for the wife's music. So much easier.

I think if someone smashed a window and broke in I'd be more worried about that and replacing the glass would cost more.

Although you may as well use SD card if the MDai doesn't do gapless anymore.

80-160gb is still better than 32Gb though.

Nah - this site is pretty good. They due who writes the articles does rounds ups of MP3 hardware and software, and he usually always includes the iPods and iTunes in his review sample (even if he doesn't post a big write up on them) so that the features and quality of them is considered.

Some of the forum members... well, you can't say that they are any worse than some of the forum members here with their bias

I did consider a GTI, however with the options I want the price will be closer to 50k I imagine which is out of my price range.

I see. I would give up all those options to get the GTI. No comparison between 2.0 TFSI and 1.4 TFSI engine. You get the real deal with GTI whereas that puny 1.4 litre engine feels underpowered sometimes when you get off the mark.

But that's in WA, where there seems to be less competition between dealers (or just higher costs to get the cars here in the first place?). In fact, at the first dealership I went to I was told something along the lines of "we're a premium brand, we don't do discounts because it would devalue our products".

Both are valid points. Given a limited but identical budget, some people would obviously be inclined to sacrifice some engine performance for a number of luxuries, whilst others would be inclined to sacrifice a number of luxuries for a model with better engine performance.

I was referring to John Hughes VW, whose attitude I felt at the time of my first and only visit to them was very elitist. Osborne Park reneged on their offer when it came to me placing the order, but Dermot at Wangara was excellent to deal with from the start.

I didn't even go to John Hughes after a friend told me how he was treated there. It was actually Wangara who came across as elitist and disorganised - surprising that most people on this forum found them just the reverse. In fairness, after I left, the salesman at Wangara phoned me and said that he'd spoken to his manager and was actually able to accept my offer after all. But by then it was too late, I was on my way to Osborne Park.

I was actually in a similar position - although in my case, I was torn between getting a Golf 118TSI or a Focus XR5. The Focus is an awful lot of fun in driving situations that I just don't find myself in, but lacks a lot of the luxury features that come standard with the Golf. Then again, most of the extra options available for the Golf are either things I don't want, or priced well over what they're worth to me. Other people might question why you'd buy a Golf at all when a Hyundai i30 does the same job for $10,000 less. It's just a matter of how much money you're willing to spend and what your priorities are.

Other people might question why you'd buy a Golf at all when a Hyundai i30 does the same job for $10,000 less. It's just a matter of how much money you're willing to spend and what your priorities are.

Out of curiosity, I did test drive the Hyundai i30 before we bought the Golf. And while I think i30 is a great improvement for Hyundai, I would still go with Golf.

The engine in i30 sucks big time in comparison to 2.0 engine in mk5 (and I suspect mk5 was the benchmark that i30 was compared with in development). The engine was very sluggish upwards around 3000 rpm; so it gets off the mark ok but in-gear acceleration suffers.
Resale value is also a concern. Interior is a bit rough.

So even if $ is tight, I would prefer to get a second hand mk5 rather than i30.

To compare it to mk6 is not really fair for i30, it is one generation behind. I guess that is why it is about $10,000 less. You do get what you pay for.
